Is the World Cup the biggest experiential marketing opportunity in the world?

Every four years, the World Cup becomes more than a sporting event. It becomes a global stage for brands.

The activations people remember aren't always the biggest ones. They're the ones that understand fans. They create places to gather, celebrate, compete, and feel like they're part of something bigger than the match itself.

The best World Cup experiences don't interrupt fandom, they amplify it.

As we get closer to kickoff, it'll be interesting to see which brands build experiences people actually want to participate in, not just walk past.

Which World Cup activations have stuck with you over the years?

Is fandom becoming more valuable than brand loyalty?

For years, brands focused on building loyalty. Today, it feels like the brands growing the fastest are building fandom instead.

There’s a difference.

Loyal customers buy your product. Fans build part of their identity around it. They show up to events, create content, introduce friends, and actively participate in the community surrounding the brand.

That’s why so many brands are investing in experiences. Fandom is hard to build through advertising alone.

Consumers increasingly want to feel part of something, not just marketed to by it.

Are we entering a fandom economy?

Are consumers starting to value “smaller” experiences more?

Feels like a lot of brands are realizing consumers don’t always want the biggest or most overproduced experience anymore.

Some of the strongest experiential work right now feels more community-driven, socially natural, and actually enjoyable to spend time inside of. Run clubs, listening events, neighborhood pop-ups, smaller dinners, local collaborations, etc.

People still want spectacle, but they also want connection. They want experiences that feel personal enough to participate in, not just stand inside of for a photo.

Curious if others are seeing the same shift.
