Greetings to almost 500 people around the community as of typing this. The name's Solid_Artist, one of the two people involved in the operations of u/DBCYR as of April 2026. You're probably wondering what's the big deal here. Well, since we're the owners of a new subreddit, my colleague u/1R0NH1DE and I have been thinking about creating an introduction to this place for members to understand its purpose and history in general. It would be nice for everyone to get an idea of what's allowed and what's not.

Disclaimer: This subreddit is not officially associated with r/Deathbattlematchups or r/buildyourroster (though if any moderator is interested in making it official, we're open to talk). However, the decisions of the former do play a role in explaining how this place came to be.

The early 2020s and the community events of that Time.

Back around 2021 to 2023 on r/Deathbattlematchups, the few rules surrounding that subreddit were different. Theme searches were allowed, but there were a lot of micro-celebrity shenanigans that often broke the rules of r/DBM due to a wider variety of matchups involving community members themselves. After things started to calm down, the trend of community events began popping up in the subreddit. The very first events that got the ball rolling were Toys to Life's KOF event, which fit into the standards of having characters from various franchises paired up as a team to battle against each other, and u/Different-Ad-82's Termina Festival, a competition of various characters getting involved in the nightmarish world of Fear and Hunger.

Which made people intrigued by the idea of telling stories and connecting how a bunch of characters submitted into these events would actually interact. This, combined with some other events like the Chemical Tasty Skull Girls event, has brought a lot of attraction towards the subreddit and annoyance to some others. Critics felt users were more interested in campaigning for character slots in events than in creating TNs, sprite art, or trailers for DBM back then. It doesn't help when there are a few events popping up in the woodwork from My Hero Academia school events, Record of Ragnarok, Total Drama, and even one that was based around characters becoming Pokémon gym leaders. For a bit, it was starting to seem like more people were occupied with coming up with the next big event that would get people talking, to the detriment of the original purpose of the Death Battle Matchups. So it was decided by the mods to establish new rules during the upcoming rise of a new season of Death Battle. As the micro-celebrities were mostly gone, theme searches were eliminated, and community events were severely hampered. If they didn't involve something pre-established with a heavy emphasis on fighting, they would not be allowed. Some people were happy about these changes, while others thought it went too far, and a few believed it was just a waste because the events would still pop up at some point. So, Aromatic-quantity867, a.k.a. u/1R0NH1DE, had an idea.

2 The creation of r/dbmcommunityevents

1r0nh1de was amongst the few people against the essentially banning of community events since he believed that it was a way for everyone to bond and grow friendships in a peaceful environment, that shouldn't generate as much toxicity as powerscaling. So in response, R/dbmcommunityevents was born. His goal was to allow users to continue hosting interactive competitions merely alone. At first, things were mostly fine at the time but there was a small but dedicated group of people who liked the idea, and on occasion it raised the people’s spirits up to engage with it, whether that be with new terminal festivals, MHA or vigilantes or otherwise, u/Prettymuchodds total drama matchups event was a favorite of a lot of people And u/SelfishEnd avengers event was one of the big things that made people stay on this subreddit. Every post of it was a massive event.

But just when it seemed like the popularity was at its best momentum, Reddit, being Reddit, completely shit the bed. When 1r0nh1de (who was on his new account at the time called u/Aromatic-quantity867) decided to take a break due to a lot of drama going on Reddit and the fact that he wasn't allowed to see his own DMs or group chats, even though he was logged into his account, and during his break to focus on himself, Reddit decided he was not in control of his account anymore and made it so that he could not log into Aromatic-quantity. This meant that for a while, DBMcommunityevents had no moderation. Thankfully, nobody did anything bad with that fact. Everyone was still carrying on, believing Aromantic would return, and recent successes like u/datbanditnamedsam's backup team event, my own attempt at doing a Termina Festival, or the recent dispatch team event kept the lights on. It would appear that things are going to be fine. Then, one random morning in the later years of 2025, the subreddit was restricted. Since Aromatic-quantity was still unable to get back into his account as the main moderator of this server, it basically killed DBMcommunity events. However, a successor rose from its ashes.

3. Meet the new subreddit: r/DBCYR (DeathBattleMatchupsCreateYourRoster)

And that brings us back to February 2026. 1r0nh1de, who had been trying for a while to regain control of his other account, realized that it was too late. Reddit, being dumb as usual, did not allow him to refresh his password or access his email to get back in as Aromatic. (Making matters worse, Reddit also killed group chats, meaning that he couldn't tell everyone else what was going on all at once.) So, it was time to try again with some caution regarding having a second moderator involved, resulting in me becoming the charge for the subreddit just to be safe. Four months later, here we are. Thankfully, there has been no big drama. Everyone is pretty chill, and some of us are planning on continuing some old events from the OG server to hear, and hopefully, this community can grow and earn some love from old friends and favorites.

Now, why exactly am I telling you all of this?

Well, I wanted to give some preamble and context to just what made this subreddit come into existence. It's important to know its history. Trust me on that. With all that out of the way, I might as well explain what the flairs mean.

Game Rosters:

Ridiculously self-explanatory. For fighting games, you are allowed to use a template from any fighting game franchise, like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. "Shooter" means it's referring to something like TF2, Overwatch, or Halo—basically, games with classes focused on shooting or fighting. If you want to create a roster based on that as the foundational groundwork, this is the flair you will choose.

Crossover roster:

A bit more complicated to explain, but not by much. It’s mainly for your stuff that's not completely related to the gaming world, so things like "Record of Ragnarok," "Good vs. Evil," or anything else entirely, as long as it involves something outside of gaming but doesn't have an emphasis on story—well, comparatively speaking, on story.

Debate:

This one is also self-explanatory, It's mostly used in regards to characters clashing. So say you're doing a fighting game tournament roster event once or the characters are gathered up then you use the debate alongside the usual debate chart to see who would win a fight. (And of course, be civil in vs debates)

Fanfiction:

This last one is admittedly vague, but it’s basically easy to figure out. The fanfiction flair is used in regard to writing stories set with events as part of the subreddit. Take 1r0nh1de’s Termina Festival fanfiction as an example. Depending on other factors associated with the Death Battle fandom in terms of fanfiction, but not completely a part of the subreddit, it might also be included. For instance, the Champions Island-inspired fanfic would technically fit into these criteria, but that’s a case-by-case basis.

Lore/interaction skits:

Now on the surface again this would look a bit confusing since technically fanfiction and lore are the same thing, If you're being technical But for the purpose of this subreddit there is a big difference FanFiction is written words lore/interaction skit means it is visual If somebody anything together renders and all of that sort into telling the story nothing creator wants to show. Something like u/theJacobs zombie apocalypse story or u/datbanditnamedsam's hero association / villain group series would fit into this category

Community polls:

I think the title of it explains what it is better than Whatever I could say. But basically if by chance two characters have a tie amount of votes This is When you use this in regards to having those two or more characters be decided by votes of a more literal usage of votes if You just want to go with one character of course. There have been multiple instances of two characters being submitted for the same role and both getting in.

And I feel like that is everything when it comes to this subreddit and everything going on with it in terms of its history and what many of the things set up are For.
