I got selected earlier this year.

Non traditional student, 30M. 7 year military member, 3 years active duty, the rest in a reserve component. Was an EMT for 4 years, 3 of which was in remote Alaska for an indigenous fishing village. UC Berkeley student, 4.0 GPA at time of selection.

Clear intent for why I felt I was a good fit for this scholarship.

I want to work in national security and defense policy, and I believe that studying Mandarin would help with that goal, and further strengthen the United States.

If any alumni can share the benefits of being a Gilman Scholar below, that would be much appreciated.

I’m quite adventurous, I see a lot of videos on facebook of guys eating raw beef and dipping it into some sort of sauce. I see sometimes they eat it with bile, I hate bile so I won’t try that, but everything else is fair game.

Only thing is I’d prefer it to be upscale or from a place that has high cleanliness standards.

Any recommendations?
