Hike at Calanques

Bonjour !

Merci

Reg. GRE Subject and General Requirements

Is there any possibility of waiver of GRE Subject requirement for applying to places in US which have marked it as required but your country has no centre for the GRE Subject Test? Has anybody got this waiver and if yes how? Otherwise, how do you think we can try to get this waiver?

Physics Graduate Studies at UIUC

Hey I am a Physics undergraduate student from outside US. I work in experimental condensed matter physics. I wanted to know how is the Physics grad school at UIUC? Ate the research groups in quantum materials and superconducting materials good? Any groups I should check out in particular? Also how is the intake in terms of foreign students and how big is the competition for Physics PhD? Thanks all!

Help: Need Accomodation for 4 Months

I am an International student and an incoming masters intern coming to Grenoble (CEA) for 4 months from September to December. Can you guys please give links for accomodation and sites to find accomodation for? I have a budget of 450-500 euros max and it should be near the Polygon scientifique or near Tram line B. If you have particular accomodation links that would be really helpful. Many Thanks!

Neuromorphic Computing and Superconducting Materials

Hi. I am a Physics guy doing research related to Superconducting Materials, Josephson Junction Arrays and all that.

I wanted to know what is the overview of Neuromorphic Computing from a Physics student point of view and how can stuff like Superconducting Spintronics or Josephson Junctions help in the hardware realisation of Neuromorphic Computing?

Job Scenario for Physics PhD

I will be joining a Physics PhD next year (2027). I wanted to know what's the job market like post PhD? In the conventional academic route what is job market after doing 1-2 post docs? How tough is it to get tenures in US, Europe and India?

Also what is the scope in Industry? Both R & D as well as non Physics fields?

I want some brutally honest opinions and genuine options because I want to gauge the scenario properly

Condensed Matter and HEP

Why does condensed matter physics not feel as attractive to a lot of undergrads as compared to HEP or Astrophysics? Is it a pedagogy issue? I feel it is probably one of the richest and most diverse fields in Physics with something for everyone.

PS: This might be my own personal bubble I'll be happy to know a larger perspective.

PhD Applications Timeline And Suggestion

Hey

I am a Physics undergrad currently doing my BS-MS dual degree. I am graduating with my MS in 2027 May. I wanted to apply for PhD positions for 2027. I have a gpa of 4 and 1 single author theoretical publication in JPCM about Topological Magnons. My master's thesis is based on Superconductor/Ferromagnet and Superconductor/Altermagnet Heterostructures and probing experimentally for topological Superconductivity signatures at interfaces. I have knowledge of transport experiments, theory and tools like DFT and DMFT. I have completed courses in Quantum Field Theory, Magnetism and Superconductivity, Instantons and Path Integrals, Decoherence and Open Quantum Systems, Group Theory for Physicists to name a few relevant.

I want to continue for a PhD in similar fields of unconventional Superconductivity and broadly quantum materials.

I wanted to ask the following:

  1. Considering my profile what are my chances of getting a top 20 US University?

  2. Should I start mailing potential PhD guides right away? What should I mention ? Any specific help is much appreciated

  3. Where can I learn about openings for Graduates/PhD specifically for Condensed Matter and Superconductivity?

  4. Any labs anyone would suggest for me to look into or any institute I should check out considering my research?

Lastly any other advice/anyone interested to discuss research or physics do so!
