Hello,
As the title suggests, which should I choose: the Rotring 800 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm? I mainly use it for writing and making notes in plans or books.
I hardly ever draw with it.
Like the title says, I’m wondering whether it’s worth repairing the GPU in my 5-year-old Alienware M15 R5.
Laptop specs:
AMD Ryzen 9
RTX 3070
32 GB RAM
2 TB SSD
About six months ago, the GPU died. I sent the laptop to a repair shop, and they told me the GPU would need to be replaced. As far as I understand, they won’t replace the entire motherboard but instead source and solder a replacement GPU chip (probably from Alibaba or a similar supplier). The repair would cost around €400 (about $460).
Right now, I don’t really need the laptop for gaming. I mainly use it for light work and occasional browsing. I also have a desktop PC with an RTX 5070, so I can play any AAA game there without issues.
The thing is, my Alienware is still in really good condition, and I genuinely like the laptop. It feels wrong to just leave it sitting there broken.
Do you think it’s worth spending the money to get it repaired, or would you just move on and save the cash?
Also, do you think repairs like this might become cheaper in the next 1–2 years? My thought was that as more of these laptops age, there could be more donor motherboards or spare parts available on the market.
I’d appreciate any opinions or experiences with similar repairs.
