New earthy yellow suggestions

New earthy yellow suggestions

I have finished my tube of Cotman Raw Sienna, and I’m debating whether to just replace it, or try something new. I currently have a mix of DS and Cotman, and like to keep a limited palette, so whatever I buy next will last until I use it up.

I just finished the DS dot cards I got for Mothers Day and I’m tempted by a few!

Nickel Azo Yellow, Raw Sienna Light, Transparent Yellow Oxide, Monte Amiata Ntr Sienna, Quin Gold are the ones that caught my eye the most.

I paint mostly landscapes, mountains, skies, sunsets, lakes, trees… I use the earthy yellow for mixing a lot of greens, earthy tones.

What do you like? Thanks!

Misty forest practice/progress

I have a pan of Rosa Gallery Green that I wanted to play with, and chose to do a misty forest tutorial by Jackie Peacock. The green ended up being much brighter/springier than I expected so I had to tone it down/darken it up a lot. It was still a lot of fun!

My first plein air!

Went on my first solo camping trip of the year and couldn’t wait to paint in the mountains. I painted a couple at the campsite and it was great. So yesterday morning I packed up my kit, a mini camp chair, and an extra layer (it was super windy and still cold in the mountains!), and went off to a spot I had found earlier.

Other than the fact my camp chair turned out to be a camp table, everything worked pretty much as planned. Struggled a bit with the brushes I packed, ended up using an angle brush that I never use and I’m not really sure how/why it ended up in my kit. But it was the star of the show. The only thing I need to figure out is what to do with the dirty water. I just poured it back in my clean bottle this time, but I think I’ll pack an empty bottle next time.

I had hoped to get out again this morning before I left, but I woke up to a winter wonderland with heavy falling snow and decided otherwise. I have two plein air workshops coming up so I’m really happy I got to try out my setup, I hope to make this a regular part of my practice!

Mothers Day practice

Wanted something light and colourful and spring-ish. Saw a beautiful painting by @jenni_avec_un_i (IG) where she broke down the steps, and it was great opportunity to play with my Qor set and some new Neptune brushes.

Tried it once and wasn’t very happy with it. Felt heavy, flat, and unbalanced. Actually went back a little while later and tried it a second time and am much happier with it.

I’ve seen Escoda brushes mentioned many times, but I am not familiar with them at all. Princeton has different series like Snap, Velvetouch, Aqua Elite, Neptune, Heritage.

Can anybody explain the different series of Escoda brushes? What would be their more budget/beginner/intro series?

My go-to brushes at home are the Silver Black Velvet, with the Princeton Velvetouch for more structured work and as budget backups.

Thanks!

I love painting mountains, it was my number one goal when I started painting. I think I’m getting a little better at shaping, using a middle ridge to give some depth, but I’m still overworking and too heavy on the dry brushing for shadow and contrast. And I really like the paper in my sketchbook, but it is quite textured which I find shows up a lot in something like this. But this was a quick fun practice, and is one step towards a majestic mountain range!

I have a quick trip away this weekend, and expect to have a lot of airport waiting time, and hopefully some downtime in one of the most beautiful areas of Canada (Vancouver Island/Victoria). I have a makeup bag and everything needs to fit. I think I’ve done it!

I ordered a travel brush set and really didn’t like it (posted about it this morning), but stopped at the dollar store and found a child’s watercolour set that had a good sized case. I’ll bring my regular paint brushes and be much happier. The lid to the case I can mix in as well! And it will fit my paper towel which will help keep my brushes from moving around (I have some sticky tack in there, and can just tape them down). My larger brushes are too long, but I have a smaller hake that will work great. For $2 I’m pretty happy.

Does anyone else not like travel brushes? I have an overnight trip coming up this weekend that will involve probably more than a few hours at the airport and I thought it would be nice to bring a small set of brushes to do a little painting. I found a great deal on a Fuumuii set of travel brushes that I thought would be perfect. Or more like how bad could they be…

I really don’t like them. They feel fat and heavy in my hand compared to normal brushes, the bristles feel soggy and floppy. They made me very unhappy to use lol.

So now I’m going to try and figure out a way to bring my own brushes without damaging them. But for the future are all travel brushes like this? Heavy and long and thick? It’s a great idea in theory, but I’m not sure I want to experiment with other travel sets.
