Advice on where to live (no car)

Hey all, I saw few posts for similar questions but I just need a practical info/advice for my case.

I'll be working on Prévessin site, mainly building 774.. and I don't have a driving license.. Do you think it's still easy for me to live in France (i.e, Ferney-Voltair) and go everyday by bus/bike)? Is it well connected by bus? Is the cycling easy on daily basis? Inside Prévessin and in france in general?

Would be nice to hear real experiences. Thanks.

Probation period for Staff roles

Hello, I've recently signed a contract with CERN for a software engineer staff position, and although I'm very excited, I'm quite anxious about the 1 year probation period. Can someone maybe give me more insights how it goes like and when they could decide to let go of someone .. I mean, being closely evaluated for a whole year sounds really stressful tbh.. any experience you can share, I'd be grateful :) thanks.

When did you give your notice to your previous employer to join CERN?

Hi everyone (who currently work or have worked at cern), i was wondering when exactly it makes sense to give my notice period to my current employer.

I got a recruiter call today telling me I'm accepted and offering me the job, and then sent me an email with all the details for the next steps, like filling in the medical questionnaire and sending my most updated CV, so he can send me the final contract within 3 weeks.

However when I asked when it makes sense to give my notice, now or after the contract, he said asap is better so you can start your notice period because we agreed on 1st of November as a start date ( which is 2 month after the ideal start date that was mentioned in the job description) because I need one month break between the two jobs and my notice period is 2 month. So if I give my notice until the end of July I can achieve that, however the contract might not be there yet.. (3 weeks it might take, he said)

What would you advise? He told me the job is already locked now for me and I totally trust him on that, but just resigning without a signed contract doesn't feel very safe, right?

Need to hear your experiences🙏

Backend Software Engineer - Database Systems (Oracle/Java) (BE-CSS-IDE-2026-82-LD) Anybody here interviewing for this role?

I've been in the interview process for this role, passed the initial application screeing, async video interview, and had a 90 min technical interview on 2nd of June .. then I was told I'd be informed about the results of it before mid June, either to continue with panel interview or rejection.. it's exactly mid June now and no update.. does this delay mean anything? Do candidates who pass technical interviews get informed earlier at least that they passed? Or do they have to schedule the panel interview and send the invitation directly, that's why it's taking time? Would love to hear your experiences..thanks.
