Has anyone with acne keloid scarring successfully gotten calf/ankle tattoos?
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for some advice and real-world experiences from people who have keloid-prone skin or tattoo artists who work with keloid-prone clients.
Here’s my current situation:
Tattoo History: I have 3 existing tattoos (two on my wrist, one on my collarbone area) from 2018 that healed completely flat with no issues.
Keloid History: Between 2020 and 2024, I started developing a few acne keloids on high-tension areas (6 on my back, 1 on my chest). However, I got a new piercing in late 2025 that healed fine with zero raised scarring.
Current Plan: I want to get my outer side calf tattooed going into my ankle, focusing on fine line / light shading work to minimize skin trauma.
I know the chest, shoulders, and upper back are high-risk zones for keloids, while the wrists, lower legs, and ears tend to carry lower skin tension. Since my scarring was triggered specifically by acne in high-tension spots, I’m trying to figure out how risky a low-trauma piece spanning down the outer calf into the ankle would be.
Questions for the community:
- For those with chest/back keloids, have you successfully gotten work on lower-tension spots like calves or ankles?
- Did you do a "patch/spot test" with your artist first (e.g., a tiny single line or a few dots) to monitor skin reaction over 3–6 months?
- Did you consult a dermatologist beforehand or use any specific preventative aftercare (like silicone gel/sheets)?
Would love to hear your thoughts, experiences, or any precautions you took! Thanks in advance!
