Stripped, sanded and finished my cabinet, now I have stains
Next steps in the repair of my old cabinet from this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/furniturerefinishing/comments/1u6ittp/old_cabinet_top_layer_peeled_off_for_the_most/
As /u/Timely-Volume-7582 suggested, I stripped the whatever it was, sanded to the bare wood and then applied a finish. Now I am left with these spots, 2 are lighter, one is large and seems to have a black center (I guess that might be water-damage?)
For the water damage I found that I might sand it again, then apply oxalic acid and refinish. But I fear that might create more of the lighter spots, which I also want to get rid of.
Any advice on how to proceed?
EDIT: I added some pictures in the comments. Overnight the finish (glossy yacht varnish) has dried and it now looks horrible! Some spots are glossy, some are entirely dull. With the lighter spots and commenters suggesting that it might still be veneer, I am starting to doubt if I can salvage this project.
