Does spec popularity actually affect your decision?

I keep bouncing between picking specs I enjoy vs avoiding overplayed ones, even when they are objectively strong.

Like for example I love Ret Paladin but man, its just so popular It's everywhere. Every M+ group I've been on has at least one, some even have two.

I’m someone who likes to push one character as close to 100% as possible, but after playing the same character for a long time, I sometimes start getting bored and think about making an alt, usually with a different playstyle.

So, for people playing regularly: do you mostly stick to one main, or do you also keep one or more alts active?

If so, what’s the main benefit (if there is any) or reason for having alt(s)?
