Sometimes the epic quest has to live up to its name (Mirkwood appreciation post)

The Mirkwood expansion was released in 2009. I believe it is the best area in terms of atmosphere in the entire game. All the ideas you have of Mirkwood being a dark, dangerous, corrupted place come to life when you start exploring it. The questlines with ghosts and the necromancer, spiders, vampires (merrevail), cultists, orc battalions, Nazgul caretakers of Dol Guldur, swamps and even that our company in the epic quest genuinely struggles to stay alive (no further spoilers) all contribute to this incredibly well done result that I expect other lore (and goth) enthusiasts also appreciate.

The top meme moments of the game.

The movies are full of such moments that became memes. What about this game? Does anything come to mind?

E.g. my vote goes to "Isengard bids 5" - widely recognizable and very often used in interactions between players.

After all these years, the scope of Goblin Town still impresses me. It is incredibly lore-friendly. Bilbo's buttons are a fun addition, even if a (satisfying) pain to collect. The quests are great. The secret entrance is cool. Gollum's cave is fantastic and visually consistent with every other adaptation I know.

But the best is the tunnel complex. Yes it can be frustrating but that's the point. Getting lost there just like Bilbo. I think of the book as I toil in there. Also of the 2003 Hobbit game I used to play in my childhood. The map being so bad and deceptive that it can trick you even after 15 years of playing. It's not supposed to be an easy stroll and I am glad it is not.

I was trying to think of another landscape dungeon that is so vast and interesting, but nothing comes to mind. There's nothing like it either on the road up until then. Nothing prepares you for this adventure, just like Bilbo.

I know most people may skip it or the entire region because they go for faster leveling (I have also been guilty of this many times) but if there are any new players here, give it a try. It's certainly a gem of the base game, well-thought out and executed with passion.
