Huge frustration : Nextcloud doesn't sync subfolders

Hello,

I've becomed very frustrated with Nextcloud during the last few months.

I have my work files on my office computer that sync to a nextcloud self hosted server (docker on an unraid NAS) and my home computer has nextcloud installed with virtual files enabled. Both my computers are on Windows 11.

Since a few months, it's driving me crazy, Nextcloud doesn't sync subfolders.
If I work on a new project, I do a new folder on my work computer and on my home computer, that folder appears as stored "in the cloud only".
Now if I right click to apply to always save it locally, nextcloud syncs, then says it's done.
If I enter the folder, most subfolders are not synced.

I have to, one by one, subfolder by subfolder, unclick always keep locally and reapply it. And Wait. If I do that on multiple subfolders at different places, it syncs one and just doesn't care about the other one.
For every single subfolder. As It's automatic folders created by a software, there are dozens of them, so I loose lot of time just waiting for each subfolder to sync, de-apply / re-apply manually on an other folder, wait, etc.

What's weird is we can see the tag is properlly propagated to the subfolders, but Nextcloud desktop seems to ignore it.

With that, I noticed a few other weird behaviors :

  1. I cannot rename a file until Nextcloud has fully synced it. It wasn't the case a few years ago. But seeing now my dropbox app does the same thing, maybe it's a change of policy on windows' side ?
  2. If Nextcloud desktop is not running, I can't access the folder on my computer. It gives me an error "cloud server is not running", like the files locally here "don't belong to me".
  3. When I ask Nextcloud to sync a "cloud only" folder, if I check the properties of that folder, it states a certain number of files, with a size of x gB, taking 0 ko of space locally. After the sync, the space used locally is the same as it should. But if I enter the folder, go to one of the subfolder that didn't sync and go back checking the properties of the main folder, it now states a higher number of files, with a bigger size, and that the local space used is only what it synced before.

So it seems that there is something very wrong here. I didn't find similar issues on the web.

Thanks for your help.

Edit 2: I just tried, if I unfold all the folder manually in the left pane, re-right click on the main folder, now always store locally is unchecked and if I click it, it seems to sync the entire folder. So something prevents the win explorer / nextcloud to access subfolder to propagate the tags ?
