Dating in Brazil

Hiiii! I was just wondering what dating culture is like in Brazil, or more specifically, Belo Horizonte.

I’ll give y’all a lil context and stuff. I’m plannin to move to BH after I graduate as an interior architect, so I’d be around 23–24 years old woman at the time. I’d be working remotely from BH for a company in my home country, Finland.

I’ve lived in a small town of about 5,000 people in Finland for my whole life, and if y’all know anything about Finnish people, you probably know that people tend to be pretty distant and reserved. Relationships usually take a long time to develop. It can be a few months of texting and getting to know each other, then seeing each other in person, then maybe going on a few dates, and only after that having a conversation about becoming a couple. It’s a pretty long process, and even the relationship itself can be quite distant. Not every relationship is like this, obviously, but it’s VERY common. Public displays of affection, like kissing or even hugging, can also be seen as a bit inappropriate or uncomfortable.

I’m personally a very social person, and I absolutely LOVE talking to people. By the time I move to BH, I’ll also have around seven years of learning, listening to, and speaking Portuguese, so hopefully that’ll make things easier. I’m a very warm and affectionate person.

So, tell me everything! How are gringas usually treated when it comes to dating in Brazil? I’m especially curious about Belo Horizonte, but I’d also love to hear about Brazilian dating culture in general. I’m really curious cuz I’ve heard that dating can be VERY different there compared to Finland. (English ain’t my first language sorry if there’s typos)

Moving to Brazil, how should i prepare mentally?

Hiii okay so I’m trying to explain the situation shortly, I’m dreaming about moving to BH one day and before I say anything I’m gonna say that I’m learning Portuguese hard sooo before setting foot in the country I can speak fluently. I’m also saving money for a safety net cuz moving to the other side of the world alone means I have to have money just in case I don’t get a job or an apartment right away.

BUT the thing I’m most interested in is how I’m going to mentally prepare for the culture shock. In Finland we don’t smile or talk to strangers, hug or use sweet words or pet names, everyone is pretty much as cold as the weather. “I love you” is something you only say to your partner like once a month. Everything is private and people don’t share a lot about themselves until the friendship has lasted at least half a year. I’ve heard Brazil can be quite different, so what should I be prepared for?

Brazilian Series and Movies

Hiii!! I’m learning Portuguese cuz I want to live in Brazil one day and I’ve heard that speaking Portuguese well makes everything pretty much easier there. Right now I use Duolingo, have my phone settings on Portuguese, listen to music, take online classes, and have a Brazilian friend who teaches me words and phrases that aren’t in textbooks. But I really want to watch Brazilian movies and series to help me get to know the language, sooo all Brazilians, share your fav shows with me!! (no matter if it’s dubbed or an original Brazilian show)

Moving to Belo Horizonte

Hi! I’ve had a dream for quite a long time about moving to Brazil—Belo Horizonte in particular feels like a perfect fit. I’ve lived my whole life in a tiny village in Eastern Finland, and the idea of moving to the other side of the world really appeals to me. I’m just wondering: how are immigrants generally treated, and is it easy to settle in? By the time I move, I would be 23 years old and I’ll have studied Portuguese for seven years cuz I’d really prefer not to use English in Brazil, simply out of respect for the locals. I’ll have studied the history and the culture. I want an ordinary daily life and to truly fit in, but I’m a bit anxious about making friends—even though I’m very social and love getting to know people and talking to them. Brazilians and residents of Belo Horizonte, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Love you all!💕
