youtu.beHybrid Battery Rising MPG: a Theory
I've seen lots of posts about how the fuel economy on the hybrid rises over the first few thousand miles but never an explanation as to "why". Having gotten over the 5000 mile mark I have a theory. (If Ford has given an official explanation I've never seen or heard it.)
On my latest tank full with my best fuel economy to date the number of "electric miles" was roughly 47% of the total miles traveled. I know that % has been rising, I remember in the first few hundred to about 2000 miles seeing that number around roughly 30%.
I believe that Ford has a hybrid battery "break in period" where the system is programmed to slowly lean more heavily on the battery and allow deeper cycles of charge and discharge which explains the rising MPG until the battery is fully broken in.
