I am 25yo and need some Career advice

TLDR: Is pursuing a Post-grad in biomedical engineering worth it considering I will have graduated in Mech E?

Hi,

I just so desperately need advice, because at this point I’m so scared of what my future will be and what I can or cannot do with my life.

I am turning 25 years old in a couple days. I’m in my final year of university studying Mech E, and most of my friends my age have graduated ages ago and solidified themselves in their career by now. I started off doing a foundation year then moved on to 2nd year where I failed a good few modules, resulting in me having to repeat the year. Luckily, I had interviewed for a placement with a company who ended up giving me a job that year, so I decided to postpone my resit to the following year. I have now completed both my placement and the resit and I’m on track to graduating in 2027.

I now just don’t know what to do with my life after graduating, I keep applying for grad jobs but just get rejected, and the thought of wasting another year after graduating working silly jobs or in something I am not interested in just puts me off. I always think about doing a masters and maybe even a PhD in the future (although I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed). I heard doing a masters isn’t necessary and it is more of a luxury than a necessity as well as a PhD.

I love Biomedical engineering, that’s what I’d pursue if I was to do a masters and PhD but everywhere I look, people say it’s useless considering bioengineering companies take on mech e majors anyway.

How could I get the best of both worlds, to pursue a masters and eventually a PhD for my own profit rather than to enhance my career, without at the same time wasting time in a way. Can I have my cake and eat it too or is that selfish?

Many thanks
