Yeah/Nay

Is a commute of approx 1 hour each way from outpatient clinic and home advisable for a newly graduate starting as an attending?

My original commute went from ten minutes each way to an hour each way at a different site due to a change to the original clinic‘s business. Not able, personally, to move to the city the new clinic is in.

Edit: It was not my choice or decision to change clinics. The original clinic could no longer support another physician coming in due to lack of patients available to fill my prospective panel. During my interview several months back, I asked and was assured that there would be enough patients to fill my panel. However now that has changed.

They also did not offer any changes to the contract I signed. I know that makes the change of clinics even worse. What can I do as I love the original city and there are no other positions in the city available?

Mission Accomplished

I posted this in another subreddit but wanted to share that it is possible to pay off student loans while being in a medicine residency program.

I am almost done with residency and will be debt free...$230k+ paid off without $$ support from a spouse, significant other, etc. I think I only once joined in buying take out for lunch with my fellow colleagues throughout residency. I took advantage of the food made available from the hospital.

I was also able to give back to the staff of my clinic for all their support with Christmas "bonuses" out of my own pocket. The first year I gave each a cash amount, then doubling it the 2nd Christmas, and then doubling the 2nd bonus the last Christmas.

I am grateful to be debt free and all my future earned income will mine alone instead of sending 1/3 of each paycheck to Mohela. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.

The next goal is retiring after several years of living within my means with a 8 figure network. **fingers crossed**

**Goals**

This is not a post to brag. I just feel a sense of accomplishment. I have had far too many failures in my life to count.

I have successfully transitioned into medicine from a previous career that ”fell” into my lap in college after a disastrous semester in organic chemistry. I will complete my last days of residency this week and have done so with no more student loan debt. I set out goals to graduate first, and to pay off my $230k+ loans during residency second.

It is going to feel good when my first paycheck as an attending hits my bank account and I don’t need to send 1/3 of it to Mohela.

S/P Graduation Ceremony Shout Out

Our PD did such a wonderful job speaking about us individually. The speech they gave about each one of us and our unique qualities and experiences really showed they took the time and that they cared.

Stark contrast to the IM PD’s short and on the fly comments about their graduates. No thoughts went into the few words that were spoken.

Really a reflection of my experience in the FM program in the past 3 years vs the malignant nature of the IM program at our hospital.

Fair or not

I will be in the outpatient clinic only after graduating from residency. During my last inpatient rotation of residency, I am dropping the ball when getting pimped by the internists. One internist commented you're a 3rd year and don't know the answers. I have shown throughout residency that I am a competent outpatient clinician but do not know as much medicine in the inpatient setting. Am I doomed when I start my practice?
