For my fellow lefties on here, What would you guys think if something like the premise of one night only movie actually became reality?
I watched one night only yesterday, and the premise is obviously pretty ridiculous, the government passes a federal mandate making premarital sex illegal except for one designated night each year. It's a romantic comedy, so it's obviously exaggerated, but it got me thinking about the broader idea behind it.
As bizarre as the scenario sounds, it also feels like the kind of extreme government control that conservatives would probably love if it aligned with their ideas about morality and how people should live. We already see this argument playing out with abortion restrictions, where the government is being given an increasingly large role in decisions that are deeply personal and involve people's bodies and relationships.
Obviously, I'm not saying I think a law like the one in the movie is actually going to happen. I'm more curious about the principle behind it. If a future government really did try to regulate consensual sex between adults and basically tell people when they were legally allowed to have it, how do you think the left would respond? Would it be viewed primarily as a bodily-autonomy issue, a religious-conservative attempt to impose morality through law, or something else? I'm curious how people here would react if this ridiculous movie premise somehow became reality.
