Watching Arcane With My Family (Updated Repost)

This is an updated post of a previous post. I’ll leave the original post inside this one for the new ones, but for the ones that’ve read the previous one, skip to the bottom.

Introduction (original post):

So, fun story here:

Half way through May I watched Arcane. I got recommended it by a friend, and since I had already heard about it, I decided to watch it. Also, I really like watching lesbian relationships on screen because I find them sweet and romantic as a straight male. It’s not wanting to date them, ”turn” them, or anything else that’s creepy.

Anyhoo, I watched it in secret from my family in around 9 days (around 2 episodes per day). I really liked it and quickly got fixated on it (especially on CaitVi, because of the aforementioned reasons).

I, along with my family, am a notorious movie/series fan. We watch at least one movie DAILY and if we start a series, we usually watch around 3 episodes A DAY.

Yeah... this might be an addiction.

Consequently, you can imagine I’ve watched enough to know what’s good VS what’s bad. And…

I LOVED ARCANE!

It was perfect! Both seasons, IMO, despite people saying season 2 was a disappointment. I noticed that it was rushed but still as good as season 1 because of the quick paced action that I liked.

Once I finished I felt like I didn’t get enough, which never really happened to me with any other series, despite me watching other good ones too (Some of my favorites being: Yellowstone, Supernatural, Desperate Housewives, Gyeongseong Creature, Friends, Succession, and 50+ good ones as well but mostly 3 seasons only and lower). After I finished I jumped on the internet to see what people created regarding the show and that‘s how I discovered AO3. For those that don’t know, it’s a site where people write fanfics about different characters from series, games, or movies. I’ve never done this before with any other series so I was curious and invested. I started reading some good Post-season 2 canon compliant fanfics about CaitVi and couldn’t stop (even now, after I post this, I’ll read one before going to sleep).

Long story short, half way through June (one month after finishing the show) I felt an urge to rewatch Arcane. However, I don’t like rewatching shows because I already know what’ll happen and it ruins the fun for me. So, to battle my urge of rewatching but also have fun watching it again, I decided to have my family watch it with me to see their reactions. They didn’t know I watched it nor did I tell them. I presented the show to them as one that I found because people where talking it was great and I wanted to watch it with them. They agreed and we began watching.

Today was the day we started and we only managed to watch the first 20 minutes of the first episode, but I’ll keep y’all updated on how it goes.

Despite us never watching an animated show before, my mom said she liked it because it has an interesting plot so far and action, while my aunt said that she doesn’t really like animation but is interested in the idea. For now, they think it just an animated show for kids because I didn’t tell them it’s TV-14 and it has some interesting scenes, such as >!season 1 episode 5 - Jayce and Mel scene, season 2 episode 3 - Cait‘s and Vi‘s first kiss, and ESPECIALLY season 2 episode 8 - jail scene.!<

I’m excited to see their reactions (especially since it keeps getting better the longer it goes) but also scared of some plot lines, such as CaitVi’s relationship as a whole, since my family isn’t homophobic but they’re not TOO fond of gay couples.

I‘m planning to keep reposting with each interesting reaction of my family to the show until we finish it. Stay tuned and I’ll tell y’all how it goes (I hope well).

Updates:

So, it’s been a few days after my original post! Here are the updates:

We’ve just finished S1E5. It’s been going slow for us since we decided to watch 1 episode a day to keep it fresh and not gobble up the series in 2–3 days.

The first act went great! My family loved it, and despite my fear of me having to force them to the show because it’s animated and feels like a cartoon, they were the ones that actually were eager to continue watching.

The first thing I feared was S1E5 (which we watched today) because of >!Jayce’s and Mel’s sex scene.!< To my surprise, my family didn’t react too bad to it. Sure... they said that cartoons nowadays are more mature and explicit, regarding the violence throughout the show, >!the brothel mentioned in the episode, and the sex scene,!< and that back in the day you’d never encounter such scenes in children’s shows (I didn’t tell them it’s for teenagers and above), but they didn’t want to turn off the show or were disgusted (mostly because the scene was very non-graphic).

The second thing I were keen at to see was their reaction to the semi-obvious introduction of the lesbian romance between Vi and Caitlyn at the brothel (the “You’re hot, cupcake” and “Man or woman” is the part I’m specifically referring to). I don’t know if they didn’t sense out the lesbian vibes or if they didn’t seem to care because there was no response in return after that; and even after the “But you’re sweet like a cupcake” part.

Anyhoo, it went better than I expected and I’m eager to see their further reaction to the upcoming scenes. I’ll keep y’all updated as I did just now.

The next update will probably be after S1E9 to wrap up their reaction to the first season and talk about their possible reaction to S1E8 where >!it becomes clear that Vi and Caitlyn are lesbians after Caitlyn says “And what about us.!<

I hope you guys enjoy this journey of surprises as much as I do and I’ll again in probably 3 days.

Arcane All Major Character Tier List

So, I’ve recently watched the entirety of Arcane and this is my honest ranking and opinion on all of the characters.

Disclaimer:

This will have many spoilers. I’ll try to hide them all but I advise you to first watch the series, if you haven’t already, and then read. Also, THIS IS JUST AN OPINION! I understand that many people may not agree with what I write here and can have a different opinion; I fully understand that and I respect their opinion. I might have some hot takes here and I don’t want a warfare in the comment section. Respectfully, I’ll also not defend my opinion with my own life and I’ll be reading your own thoughts to see some things from a different side.

Tier List:

1. Vi

She is the best character in my opinion. Her actions are always based depending on her situations and she always cares for the ones she loves.

2. Caitlyn

Second best, mostly because I absolutely loved the CaitVi relationship. I agree with some opinions that >!she definitely was a bitch in S2 once or twice, especially in S2E3 where she hit Vi for her own fault.!<But overall, she’s a great, well-written character. Her actions are also *mostly* based, and I feel like >!she kind of redeemed herself in S2E6 when she betrayed Ambessa for Vi, and later in S2E8 when she released Jinx for Vi despite Jinx literally being the person that killed her mother and Caitlyn clearly showing direct hate towards.!<

3. Silco

This is a VERY big hot take, because people almost always put Jinx at least in the top 3; however, my personal opinion is different. Silco was an absolutely (this is the second time I’ve said this word already) perfect villain—one of the best ever created in fiction. Why? Well because he didn’t even feel like a villain. His actions were always based, just like Vi’s, with the only difference being that his lead the wrong way. If only he didn’t >!try to prove Vander wrong and worked with him to make Zaun a better place, it could’ve went so much better (like it is shown in S2E7). Also, his death in S1E9 was heartbreaking. !<Best villain ever—no more, no less.

4. Jinx

In spite of me not putting her in the top 3, I still consider her a marvelous character and the highlight of the show. The only thing that kept her out of the top 3 was that I sometimes found her actions very shifty. I know that it was because of >!her trauma after accidentally killing Vander, Mylo, and Claggor, and Vi not being able to give her shelter and Silco mistakenly making her a villain,!< but she sometimes was indeed a little annoying and that made her fall out of the top 3. I also loved >!her changing sides after S2E5 to the right side and finally reuniting with her sister.!<

5. Ekko

Unfortunately, he was kind of a niche character, not getting much screen-time, albeit I liked him. He always acted to help others and >!get rid of shimmer (which was the main thing that made Silco a villain instead of a good guy). It was in S2E7 that I absolutely fell in love with his character. Overall, I like S2E7, and Ekko and *nice* Jinx being its highlight was chef’s kiss.!< He should’ve gotten more screen-time.

6. Heimerdinger

He was truly one of the best side character. And the thing that breaks me up the most is that >!he was right about hextech, etc. from the beginning but no one listened to him. Also, I feel like he was violated in S2E7 by being excluded from the series. I don’t know if he died or got transported to a different universe, but all I know was that he should’ve went back with Ekko and gotten the justice he deserved. Perhaps he should’ve returned to the council even.!< Overall, he was such a chill and kind dude.

7. Vander

I feel like I don’t gotta explain. By far one of the most righteous of characters. The only reason I put him this low is because he had an absurdly low amount of screen-time after >!S1E3 and I didn’t like Warwick and how they treated him. Perchance, he would’ve ended up higher on the list if only Viktor had managed to heal him and he would get his deserved screen-time as the character who we know and love.!<

8. Viktor

Viktor‘s storyline and reasons why he did some stuff where quite messy so I didn’t know where to put him. I really liked him as a character but >!his unexpected transformation from neutral Viktor, to good Viktor, to evil Viktor, left me in a dilemma on if I liked him or not.!< Nevertheless, because of how well-written he was in S1, I really liked him and he still stays as one of my favorites (despite being top 8, but this is only because there are manifold perfect characters and if I could, I’d put ‘em all at top 1).

9. Sevika

Quite the interesting character. >!She Silco’s right hand in S1, but not as understandable and explained to be a good villain just like Silco was.!< Consequently, I didn’t like her at first, and >!after her fight with Vi in S1E5, I’d say hated.!< However, S2 came around and she grew on me. She finally felt the same type of *based* as Silco. >!Her helping Jinx and finally turning into the good side felt satisfying. Although, I do feel like her storyline was rushed towards the end after Isha’s sacrifice, because we didn’t see her much aside from the last fight and her becoming a part of the council.!<

10. Jayce

I felt neutral for him almost the whole series. He was just there, sometimes doing wrong and sometimes doing right, always trying to be the righteous but not always succeeding in it. He slightly redeemed himself and I began to like him when >!I understood after S2E7 that he was doing the right stuff when trying to stop Viktor and that he wasn’t just a lunatic that destroyed everything after S2E6.!<

11. Ambessa

Basically a typical villain. Not based like Silco but not bad. She was a >!power-hungry bitch which ultimately lead to her villain arc and eventual demise.!< Couldn’t say I liked her—because she was a villain, duh—or didn’t like her because she was just a villain without a big backstory or reasoning like Silco.

12. Isha

Loved this little one, however, she didn’t get much screen-time nor she was a fundamental character so she had to be placed this low. >!Her sacrifice was as heartbreaking as Silco’s death and I liked her overall. Jinx adopting her was also an interesting part of the story.!<

13. Mylo & Claggor

I put them at the same spot because they were basically equal. Always appeared in the same scenes and had equal importance in the show’s narrative. >!I feel like their death was necessary to propel Jinx’s villain arc and the creators did it well.!< They served their purpose. I’m putting them this low because they didn’t have much screen-time after >!S1E3 where they died (except S2E7, but it wasn’t much),!< and they weren’t *pivotal*.

14. Mel

She was just a boring character. Didn’t play a huge part in S1 and was pretty much gone almost all the time throughout S2 except >!the final fight and the Black Rose bit. Also, it was kind of disappointing that her relationship with Jayce didn’t get further development.!<

15. Maddie

Just a supporting character. Not much to say about her aside from >!her betrayal at the end. She got what she deserved.!<

16. Sky

I liked her because she was just a nice side character to help out Viktor. She filled out what he lacked >!and despite her death which was kinda sad, she still played a substantial role as a side character in Viktor’s mind.!<

17. Benzo

He was a chill guy like Vander. We’re getting into the least fundamental characters that appeared a few times and were gone so I won’t have much to say about them.

18. Loris

A very kind and helpful dude. >!His death at the end was unexpected but he served his role.!<

19. Singed

He was a solid side villain. Not fully villain like Ambessa, but not a good guy—similar to Silco but not so key to the story. All I’m saying is that he had his reasons to be a villain.

20. Grayson

And lastly, Grayson. Not too important but still worth mentioning. >!Her death was abrupt and we didn’t see much of her (or maybe even not at all, I don’t recall) after S1E3.!<

Summary:

So this would wrap up my tier list. These were my top 20 favorites. I hope it wasn’t too long and that I kept y’all entertained. Like I’ve said before, these are my personal thoughts so feel free to share your own. Additionally, im aware that I didn’t included all the characters (like all the council members, etc.), and it’s because I either forgot about some (which I’m sorry if I did, and I’ll edit to add them back if I suddenly remember) or I didn‘t find them important or interesting enough to yap about each one separately (which arcane does have a substantial amount of characters).
