Which commons and rare players are worth to upgrade? Or should we only focus on epics/legendaries?

Tips/advice for beginners

I'm new to the game, please share any tips/advice you may have for a beginner. Like what things should i prioritize first, who should i upgrade, what should i spend gems on?
