Based on my opinions and predilections in 2026, I wonder if I would have picked the right side of history in 1776.

Has anyone ever considered whether they'd actually take the side of the Americans during the course of the war? I'm in my thirties now, and I wonder whether I'd actually say yes to this proposition: We, a group of mainly farmers, are going to fight the most powerful nation in the world, and then if we win, we'll start a new one. It seems ludacris to me.... But of course I'd be wrong.

Burnable v Combustible as Trash Category in Japan

I've been in Japan this month, and I've found it fascinating that there are different descriptions for their main trash category. That's where paper, leftover food, most plastics, etc. go. And it all gets burned.

Well anyway, I've seen both burnable and combustible as labels for this category on various trash cans. And I'd love feedback on this. I see burnable as an appropriate term, because it means that the item ican be burned under high heat. However, combustible seems to imply that it's inherently more likely than other things to start on fire suddenly... And that's not the meaning of the trash category. It's supposed to be "can be burned," not "likely to be burned."

Do you all agree? I'm not saying that combustible is completely wrong, but I do believe it's inaccurate.

Is Tom Hanks Hollywood's most comforting actor?

Bear with me... Every time I see him or I think of him, I start to calm down. In every movie he's in, including You've Got Mail, where he's kind of a jerk, he's totally lovable. I'm not saying it's competence, like he's an action hero that could save me, just that he's sort of like a nondescript but friendly neighbor who no matter what, would always have my best interest at heart.

I literally can't imagine someone finding him scary... Am I alone here?
