Contemplating joining FIFO Mines or FIFO Oil Rigs!
I’m a 23-year-old from the U.S. who is seriously considering pursuing a FIFO position in Australia, and I’m trying to understand the process from someone with firsthand experience. From what I understand, I would need an appropriate work visa and approximately 5,000 AUD in available funds to get started. Are there any entry-level positions that provide on-the-job training, or is prior industry-specific experience generally expected?
I have previous experience working with shingles, steel buildings, and similar construction-related work, although I recognize that much of it may not directly translate to the qualifications required for FIFO mining or oil and gas positions. That said, I believe the work ethic, physical conditioning, adaptability, and willingness to learn developed through that experience would still be valuable.
If certifications are required, I’d really appreciate it if you could explain which certifications you obtained, which ones were essential for securing your position, and whether there are any you would recommend obtaining before applying. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience!
