Reflecting on our legacy: Why have we failed to honor leaders like Dr. Ram Chandra Vikal?
When we look at the landscape of Western UP, it is impossible to ignore how effectively other communities, specifically the Jats, have cemented their leaders into the national narrative. They ensured that a leader like Chaudhary Charan Singh received every honor he was entitled to—from naming universities, airports, and major city squares after him, to successfully lobbying for the highest national recognition, the Bharat Ratna. They built a legacy that ensures his influence remains immortalized in the public consciousness. Meanwhile, I look at our own history and feel a sense of profound failure. Take the example of Dr. Ram Chandra Vikal. He was a towering figure who dedicated his entire life to the service of the people and made immense sacrifices for the community. Yet, why have we failed so miserably in ensuring he receives the respect he truly deserves?
