How do I train non food or toy motivated puppy?
I’ve been having some trouble training my 11 week old pup (orange collar, she’s from a breeder who lives on a farm but has sold dogs throughout the PNW). I’ve had her for 2 weeks and noticed she’s quite reticent (she can also be a little sweetheart, loves to climb into laps and between legs). I went very easy on her training the first week because she took just about that long to even settle in (wasn’t eating much, playing with toys, responding to treats, or even walking around.)
Now, she’s more comfortable and settled, but the issue I’m running into is her energy and focus. She isn’t highly food motivated nor is she entirely toy motivated. Teaching her to come was and continues to be challenging as she seems to prefer laying down as much as possible and not moving. Thus far, she has only ever walked back to me when I tell her to come, no running or urgency when I have either treats or toys. I thought maybe I physically tired her too much before training sessions, so I tried decreasing the amount of playtime we had before teaching: she had the energy to play with her toys, but not much of the focus to pay attention to me. Also, she has an ongoing itching problem (entirely different story) that I feel can be quite disruptive to her focus.
When she’s running around outside, she comes to immediate stops to lie down only ever in the shade. This is constant. I considered the possibility that she might be having pain in her legs or her hips which might explain why she prefers laying down, but for as laid back as she is, she is capable of intense zoomies and she hasn’t cried or whimpered while being active despite being a very vocal dog. Maybe she prefers being cool or gets warm easily. She drinks A LOT of water, will lay down in her crate or play pen with her head on the water bowl so she can leisurely drink.
Training her is finding a very fine balance between bringing her energy up to be motivated to work with me, but not too high that she won’t listen to me.
She is fine in a crate overnight only. During the day, she will have accidents, cry, and whine while in her crate or play pen. She knows the backyard is her place to pee or poop, I’ve been trying to train her to go on turf so that she can go indoors if needed if no one is home. She never pees immediately when brought outside, she WILL sniff around before squatting even when I know she HAS to go. If I place her immediately on the turf to go first thing in the morning for example, she will still walk around (and off the turf) before going. When she starts to pee on the grass, I bring her to the turf and reward her. Trouble is, she stops peeing each time. I don’t want to bring her inside just yet when I know she still has to go, but she won’t go again afterward. So I take her back inside and will try again in a little bit and the cycle repeats. I worry about her not fully emptying her bladder so after a few tries, I’ll relent and just let her go on the grass.
She’s very gentle when grabbing treats from anyone’s hands, she plays rough with other puppies that I always have to keep her on a leash or harness so I can control her.
Her harness (which is loose) makes her very uncomfortable. She’s still warming up to it. She’s not great when I’m teaching her to walk on a leash. She often doesn’t walk or respond to treats.
Please give me any and all of your recommendations. Do I stick with the potty training and hope it catches on? How do I get her motivated for training sessions? If you’ve experienced training a similar personality dog, what worked for you? At what point do I get a professional trainer involved? Is she constantly thirsty because she’s stressed?
(A family member recently got an Aussie as well (blue collar), only about 2-3 weeks older but highly food motivated and will pee/poop on command, doesn’t go manic in their crate during the day, making good progress with leash training. I understand each dog is different and I shouldn’t compare, but I’m worried if she’s not getting it now, will it eventually be too late?)
