Genetics

Hi there,
I recently informed our CKC (Canadian kennel club) breeder about our dogs tier 2 epilepsy diagnosis (he’s 2 years old) as our neurologist said it’s highly genetic. Our breeder said that they had never heard of this disease before. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what this means for the breeder? Are they not able to breed his parents anymore?

Do you bring your dogs emergency drugs everywhere?

Hi all, new epi dog mom. Just wondering if you bring your dogs emergency drugs (we have diazepam) everywhere your dog goes? My worry is if he has a big one when we are out with him and I don’t have it. Thanks for sharing.

Owner anxiety

Hi there,
New to this all. My 2 year old mini schnauzer was diagnosed with epilepsy beginning of this week after two grand mal seizures and had normal bloodwork, MRI and spinal tap. He’s on keppra 3x a day and hasn’t had more seizures.
But I am absolutely terrified for the next. Both occurred in the middle of the night and I’m finding I can’t sleep now. Any noise, any movement- I wake up and worry.

Is it possible to be well controlled on keppra 3x a day? In my head I’m prepping myself for him to have seizures any second of every day and it’s driving me insane. Part of me wonders if I have some sort of ptsd and need some counselling.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, it helps make me feel less alone.

GI upset on Keppra?

Hi everyone,
My 2 year old mini schnauzer was recently diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. He’s on 500mg Keppra three times a day. He’s been doing well but holy crow does he have some wicked gas. Like putrid lol. Poops are normal though. Did anyone else experience this? Does it get better as he adjusts to the drug? Thank you in advance!

New Epilepsy dog mom

Hi everyone,

Our 2.5 year old mini schnauzer suddenly had two seizures in the middle of the night (both times after he had fallen asleep). They were horrible giant grand mal seizures lasting 1 minute each with a long post ictal phase. He was rushed to the ER vet and started on keppra 3x a day. In this hospitalization they also had an amazing neurologist who did an MRI, blood work and spinal tap to rule out other nasty causes and therefore is confident in an epilepsy diagnosis since the other tests came back clear. We did get rescue med diazepam to have on hand if needed.

He’s so young and I’m just so worried. He’s our world and now I’m scared of falling asleep due to how traumatic his seizures were. He does sleep between us so I’m not worried about missing them. We also don’t have pet insurance due to a puppy murmur he had (wasn’t eligible) and so the possibility of frequent ER visits if his seizures aren’t controlled scare the crap out of me financially.

If anyone has words of wisdom, advice or similar experience that could calm a worried dog mammas heart it would be much appreciated.

Seizures

Hello,
Our sweet 2.5 year old mini schnauzer experienced 2 tonic clonic seizures out of the blue last night. He’s now hospitalized and receiving keppra to prevent seizures. Bloodwork looked ok so the vet is suspecting epilepsy and he is having a brain MRI and spinal tap to rule out something called encephalitis. Does anyone have any experience with either of these diseases in minis that could ease a dog mammas heart? Thank you so much. We are heartbroken.
