What the hell happened to Nairobi Show???

I went to the Nairobi Show recently and honestly, I left wondering: what the fuck happened to this country?

Let me start with the entrance fees.

KSh 350 for adults. Fine.

But KSh 300 for children?

Who the hell is bringing their kids to the show at KSh 300 a head?

I remember a time when the Nairobi Show was something families could actually go to. Kids were charged significantly less. It was an event you took your children to because they could walk around, see things, learn things, discover stuff.

Now you're basically looking at KSh 1,300 for two parents and two kids just to walk through the gate.

And then you get inside.

Where are the exhibitions?

This is the part that genuinely shocked me.

I remember going to the Nairobi Show and seeing companies showcasing actual products and innovations.

New agricultural equipment.

New cooking technologies.

Biogas systems.

Machinery.

New inventions.

Companies showing people, “Look what we've built.”

That's what made the show interesting.

This time?

Empty stalls everywhere.

And the stalls that were occupied were overwhelmingly government-related institutions, food vendors, hawkers and a handful of companies that could obviously afford to be there.

And that got me thinking.

What does it say about the state of the private sector when an exhibition that is supposed to showcase what Kenya is producing has so little private-sector participation?

Because the Nairobi Show isn't supposed to just be a giant marketplace for nyama, clothes and snacks.

It's supposed to be a showcase of what the country is building.

You should walk through there and come out thinking:

"Damn. Look at what Kenyans are making."

Instead, I kept seeing empty space.

And then there was another thing I noticed.

Where were the Chinese businesses?

Where were the Indian businesses?

For years, you could go to these kinds of exhibitions and find foreign companies and entrepreneurs showcasing machinery, equipment, technology, manufacturing products and all kinds of things.

This time?

Almost nothing.

Maybe I caught the show on a bad year. Maybe there were exhibitors I simply didn't encounter.

But that's precisely why the whole thing bothered me.

Because when you walk through a national exhibition and the overwhelming impression you get is:

government institutions + food vendors + hawkers + empty stalls

you have to ask yourself what happened to the productive economy underneath all of that.

And here's the thing:

I'm not an economist.

I'm not going to pretend that one exhibition can tell me exactly what Kenya's GDP, private investment or manufacturing output is doing.

But I do know what I saw.

And what I saw did not look like a country confidently showcasing a thriving private sector.

It looked like a country where the people who are supposed to be building, manufacturing, innovating and investing are increasingly absent from the room.

And that, to me, is far more disturbing than an empty stall.

Because the Nairobi Show is supposed to be a mirror of what we're building.

And if the mirror is mostly empty, maybe we should stop arguing about whether the reflection looks good and start asking why there's so little in front of it.

And yes, politically, I have to ask the obvious question too:

What the fuck has this government actually done to create an environment where businesses want to invest, manufacture, innovate and show up?

Because if this is what one of our country's biggest public exhibitions looks like, I'm not interested in being told everything is fine simply because some macroeconomic number somewhere says otherwise.

I was there.

I saw what was there.

And I saw what wasn't.

Fuck Ruto and his government for whatever responsibility they bear for this mess.

But more importantly:

What the fuck happened to the Nairobi Show?

Is your relationship working for you?

Today I decided to do a kind of relationship evaluation, using ChatGPT so don't shoot me

Anyway, I really liked the questions it gave me and I thought I'd share the entire thing

If it's too long, pole

Phase 1 - KYC (Know Your Human)

Especially if don't think you've ever really had this conversation

Life Vision

  • What does a successful life look like to you?
  • If you could wake up in ten years and life had gone really well, what would it look like?
  • What kind of home do you imagine?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you want?
  • What do you think makes someone successful?

Work

Don't ask:

>

Instead ask:

  • What role does work play in your life?
  • If money wasn't an issue, what would you spend your days doing?
  • What kind of work gives you energy?
  • What kind of work drains you?
  • Do you see work as something to enjoy, tolerate or avoid?

Responsibility

  • What responsibilities do you think each partner should have?
  • When one partner isn't earning, what does contribution look like?
  • What does fairness mean to you?

Money

  • Should finances always be shared?
  • Should each person have their own money?
  • What would happen if one of us lost our income?
  • How much financial security do you need to feel okay?

Honesty

This one fascinates me because it's clearly important to you.

  • What does honesty mean to you?
  • Are white lies okay?
  • Are there situations where pretending is justified?
  • What's something you've been afraid to tell me?

Phase 2 - Relationship Review

Corporate style 😄

Continue

What should we definitely keep doing?

Examples:

  • What do I do that makes you feel loved?
  • What do you appreciate that I maybe don't notice?

Stop

Not accusations.

Just:

  • What's one thing I do that makes life harder for you?
  • What's one thing you do that makes life harder for me?

Start

  • What's one thing you've wanted from me but never asked?
  • What's one thing you'd like us to start doing together?

Phase 3 - Partnership

This is where your concerns live.

I'd ask:

>

Then explore:

  • If one of us loses a job...
  • If one of us gets sick...
  • If we have children...
  • If we have to move...
  • If one person earns much more...

What does teamwork mean?

Phase 4 - Conflict

I think this is a hidden weakness in most relationships.

  • When we argue, what do you wish I'd do differently?
  • What makes you feel unheard?
  • What makes you shut down?
  • How do you know when you've hurt me?

Phase 5 - Growth

This is my favourite.

Ask each other:

>

Not

>

Not

>

Who?

Then:

  • What habits are you trying to build?
  • What habits are you trying to lose?
  • What's your biggest weakness?
  • What are you actively working on?

Phase 6 - Compatibility

Not

>

Instead:

>

Then ask:

  • Where do I help you grow?
  • Where do I hold you back?
  • Where do you help me grow?
  • Where do you hold me back?

Those are uncomfortable questions.

But they're revealing.

Phase 7 - The Future

I'd ask:

  • Why do you want us to stay together?
  • What kind of couple do you think we are?
  • What scares you most about our future?
  • What's the biggest risk to our relationship?

My favourite question

If I could only ask one...

It would be:

>

Because I think the answer to that predicts almost everything else.

Questions for YOU (without her)

These are the ones I think are the most important.

1.

If she never changed...

Would I still choose her?

Not:

>

Not:

>

As she is.

2.

If I met her today...

Knowing everything I know...

Would I ask her on a second date?

That's brutal.

But revealing.

3.

Do I miss her...

Or do I miss being loved?

Those are different.

4.

Am I staying because of our future...

Or because of our past?

5.

Would I advise my son to marry someone with this relationship dynamic?

This one gets around our tendency to make excuses for ourselves. People often give clearer advice to someone they love than they do to themselves.

6.

What standards am I asking her to meet that I haven't consistently met myself?

This doesn't mean lowering your standards. It means making sure you're holding yourself to them too.

7.

If we both became more like ourselves over the next five years—not idealized versions, but more of who we already are—would our lives move closer together or further apart?

I think that's one of the deepest compatibility questions there is.
