Painting my mom, she didn’t like it

Started playing with low quality acrylic paint and paper. Made a portrait of my mom and her cat. Love the colors. She said she doesn’t look like that, that she didn’t see herself there. I spent a lot of time on it and thought I captured some of her features (although she looks still and the anatomy is not the best).

How can I improve with acrylics? Not sure if it is the quality of the paint but it was a bit a pain in the ass to use. I love the high contrast tho.

Thanks!
