Are there any patient scenarios that were pretty unrealistic?
I just finished both seasons, and overall, I really enjoyed it! It started out feeling very forced, but I quickly kept wanting to see the next episode. I’ve actually worked in an ER before as registration and admitting clerk, so while some storylines felt very familiar and like I almost knew what to predict, others felt a little unrealistic. Most notably the man who came in and was diagnosed with sepsis, intubated, maxed out on the highest vent setting, and finally his kids agreed to take him off and let him pass…despite his medical record stating he did not want that. I believe the doctor also told his kids that he may even be able to talk once he was extubated. For anyone with clinical knowledge…does this seem realistic? Would a hospital ever put someone on a life preserving machine when their medical record states they don’t want that? Would a person be able to speak to their family in their final moments if the vent was no longer able to help them? Can this whole process actually happen in a fraction of a 12 hour shift?
