How is it like working as banker / finance sector in 2026?
Hi all!
I am at the stage where I will be choosing my career trajectory soon. If I enter university, I would like it to be either finance or CS related, or both.
I have a few questions regarding the finance industry in sg, and it will mean a lot to me if I can get some answers to clear up some of the doubts i have.
May I ask:
1)What types of (high earning) finance jobs are out there?
2)In your work, is it mostly just writing reports and giving presentations?
3)Is the intellectually stimulating, or mostly menial?
4)What kind of knowledge do you need?
5)Is technical knowledge or experience more important?
6)Did you put into use the knowledge you learned in university?
7)In order to do well, does one need vigorous technical know how?
8)Is having connections especially important in this industry? (as compared to say tech)
9)What degree/major to take if I want to get into finance? Am I expected to spam internships in uni?
10)How is the future outlook of the finance industry?(my impression is that it is doing relatively well and only getting better, but feel free to correct me)
11)Is there a big difference between working in MNC vs SME? if so whats the differences?
12)How is the work culture? Do finance jobs have worse office politics?
13)possibility for overseas transfer?
And lastly, how easy is it to transition to finance as a :
1)CS grad
2)mid career software engineer? (If i ever go into swe but want to transition)
Has any CS grads here successfully got into finance after graduating?
So yeah, it will be great if anyone can answer any of my questions. I am in quite a dilemma in the moment actually, as I am very passionate for CS, but at the same time I am told finance has better career prospects.
To compromise, I am kind of considering studying both to a certain degree in uni(but not sure if this is a good idea tbh). Based on my research I have this impression that finance in Singapore has one of the better career outlooks.
Thanks in advance!
