The Potential Switch
Current setup. I’ve got a solid desktop, Ryzen 9 7900X, Radeon RX 9070 XT, sixty four gigs of RAM, two terabyte SSD, no complaints on performance. I’ve also got a laptop I barely use. The problem isn’t the hardware, it’s time. Between work and a seven month old puppy that’s a handful right now, I’m only sitting down at the desktop maybe five hours a month. Add in getting married next year with kids probably not far behind, and that number’s not going up anytime soon.
The plan. Sell the desktop and the old laptop, put that toward a Zephyrus G14 with the Ryzen AI chip and a 5070 Ti. The idea is one machine that does everything, couch browsing, work stuff, movies, travel, hotel rooms, and then docks at my desk on a cooling pad when I actually do have time to game. I don’t chase ultra settings, I just want good frame rates that look good, so I’m fine giving up some headroom versus the desktop for the sake of having just one machine that goes anywhere.
What I’m unsure about. Consolidating multiple devices into one high end laptop feels like the right move on paper for my lifestyle, but there’s something about giving up a dedicated desktop that feels like a step back, even if I’m barely using it. So, has anyone actually made this switch for lifestyle reasons rather than performance reasons. Did it stick, or did you end up missing the desktop more than you expected.
Appreciate any honest takes.
