Hot weather for the bank holiday weekend?
Good agreement between the models that the weather will turn much warmer in the coming days, particularly across the southern half of the UK. However, as you'd expect, there are still differences between the various models.
This morning's UKV run shows temperatures locally reaching 32°C in East Anglia on Saturday afternoon. (Note: this is the full-grid output rather than the more widely available thinned-grid view.) However, the ECMWF IFS model (00Z chart attached) has temperatures closer to the mid-20s °C.
At this stage it’s not possible to say confidently which will be right. Another factor to bear in mind is the possibility of showers developing on Saturday, some of which could become heavy and thundery.
The key message is to keep up to date with the short-range forecasts.
As a thank you to everyone who uses our site, and to help people plan ahead, we've unlocked the premium ECMWF data-based UK place and postcode forecasts on The Weather Outlook until the end of 25 May.
To use them, just select your 16-day forecast as normal and tap the ECMWF button under the forecast panel. You'll automatically switch from GFS to ECMWF data. No registration or login is needed.
