How to handle question from a coach: "What is dissent?"
Over the weekend I was CR for a few high school tournament games. During one of the games I called a trip against one of the teams and I heard from the head coach on the side line on the far side of the field "You call that foul but not the one against us?" With play stopped I went over to the HC and issued a yellow for dissent. HC asked "Why was that a foul but not the one against us?" I reiterated to the coach that he could ask what the call is, but that was the end of it. Trip by orange, DFK for white coming out. Assistant Coach asked "What's Dissent?" This was at least the third time I've had a (high school) coach ask me that question. I threw out "Look it up in the dictionary." I briefly considered a YC to the Assistant, but thought it may have been a legitimate question. Has anyone else been asked that question by a coach? I find it hard to believe that a high school soccer coach does not know what dissent is. A rec coach, maybe. I was not going to explain what is and is not dissent to a coach in the middle of a game, or the finer points of any of the rules for that matter either. Any suggestions on how to address that question by a coach? Lengthy conversations are generally not helpful at this point in the game. Has anyone every quoted the law at a coach? "Law 12, section 4, cautionable offenses by Team Officials."
