Hi, just subscribed to the sub so I hope this discussion is welcome, even if only using the film to talk about real life.

In the film, the characters are in a situation where they have to confront being stuck with plantation money when they need ‘real world’ dollars. The plantation money is used to keep them in their system/ class on the bottom of society, they urge for the real money that will ‘free’ them from this.

I’ve just been ruminating on this when it hit me that today- all money is plantation money. I’m a struggling artist, and though in some way I can be perceived as running my own business, it’s really just begging. I don’t keep any money I make, I goes right back to rent and bills. Keeping me in place.

Money is being used to keep me in a poor class. I can dream of making more, but that won’t make me free. I’ll always have to work, not in a way that even benefits society or any human being necessarily. 99% of us are wage slaves.

I’m glad the film is getting the recognition it deserved. I hope an after effect is people being willing to have these uncomfortable discussions and look at this ugly history because so much of it is alive and has effects today.
