Best days to book holiday travel home to NJ? (Thanksgiving & Winter Break)

Hey guys, out-of-state FYE freshman here trying to lock in advance prices for flights/trains back home to NJ for the holidays.

For Thanksgiving break, when do people normally head out? Is Tuesday night packed, or is Wednesday morning better? Do FYE professors usually have mandatory stuff on that Tuesday before the break?

For Winter break, I see final exams run Monday, Dec 14 through Saturday, Dec 19. Is it incredibly risky to book a flight for Friday or Saturday morning, or do engineering finals often run all the way to the final blocks on Saturday? Should I just hold off completely until the Registrar releases the actual exam dates in late September?

Traveling home for Fall Break vs. Family Weekend (FYE freshman question) 2026

Hey everyone, I’m a freshman in First-Year Engineering and trying to plan a trip back home to NJ.

Looking at the calendar, Fall Break is Monday, Oct 12 and Tuesday, Oct 13 (no classes). But I see Family Weekend events/game days are listed for that Thursday/Friday (Oct 15–16).

For anyone who has been through FYE, do professors typically cancel classes or hold exams on those weekdays right after Fall Break, or should I expect a normal schedule for Wednesday through Friday?

Just trying to figure out if it's realistic to stay home in NJ for the whole week or if I need to skip the travel.

Thanks!
