Returning to work

Hi everyone. I hope this ok to ask - I'm looking for some advice about return to work (or not), as a result of facial palsy. My husband developed facial palsy at the end of April following a cycling accident in which his facial nerve was crushed. He has regained some movement in his face but he has difficulty speaking and finds it very tiring and his eye hasn't recovered much so he needs to manually blink, tape at night etc.
He's a university lecturer and his job involves speaking all day and looking at a computer for hours, both of which would be very difficult for him right now. His sick pay runs out in mid October and it's impossible to know whether he will recover partially or completely and if so, how long it will take. This is new to us so wondered if anyone has advice on who to speak to (unions or an employment laywer?), or experience of how OH deal with facial palsy /any things we should consider and if he doesn't recover, whether anyone has retired early through ill health as a result of facial palsy? Thanks in advance.
