When Is the "Correct" Time to Ask About a Job Application? Does it Matter?

Hello everyone!

This might be a silly question, but I was wondering whether anyone has any input on this or knows of any references in Lilly or Frawley that might address it.

When applying for jobs—or really anything that requires a formal application—should one take into account whether the horary chart is erected before or after the application materials are prepared? In other words, is it more appropriate to ask the question before I have completed the application, or only after everything has been prepared and submitted?

Just for context: I am an academic applying for professor positions (as I have been for a little while now, lol). The application process for these jobs is often quite intensive and usually requires several documents beyond a standard CV or resume—research statements, teaching dossiers, writing samples, course syllabi, research proposals, and so on. These materials obviously play a significant role in whether or not one is successful.

Typically, I have always pulled up the horary chart before preparing any of these documents, simply to get a sense of how things might unfold. In practice, and looking back over the overall data of my job search, it does not seem to have mattered much; charts asked before the application was prepared have still described the outcome accurately. That said, I thought I would ask the question anyway.

I currently have my eye on a position that I would really love. It requires more preparation than usual--that is, documents that are not necessarily part of every application. The horary I asked about it did not look particularly promising, and it got me wondering whether my timing was wrong (though, I doubt it in this case, as I am typically someone who just trusts the chart).

Would it be more appropriate to erect the chart only after I have prepared all of the materials required for the application? Or would the chart still stand even if asked before any of that work has been completed?

I suspect I already know the answer, but I thought I would pick some brains here and see what others think!

Thank you everyone, for humouring me lol

House lord for acadmeic writing?

Hi everyone!!

I’m a bit stuck on house assignment in horary and getting mixed answers depending on who I read.

In my case I’m trying to figure out how to classify “scholarly work,” specifically things like:

PhD dissertation material, academic writing/research draft etc (all related to scholarly pursuits)

I’ve always understood the 3rd house as writing, papers, documents, etc., and the 5th as creative output like stories, art, film, etc but I’m not sure where academic writing falls in practice

In the Lilly-style horary, would scholarly/academic writing be 3rd house, 5th house, or something else entirely (like 9th?)

thank you so much!!
