Why do they look like that

These pre-Columbian creatures look like canines to me at first glance but they’re not. In every book I can find they’re described as jaguars. So why were they depicted with such long almost crocodilian snouts? The ancient people of Peru and Argentina worshipped and had contact to jaguars so why do they look like completely different animals?

South American Mythology

Wanted to ask if anyone can find any myths or legends surrounding monkeys in South American mythology? I thought they would be more abundant considering how many indigenous groups lived/live in the Amazon.
More specifically- I have been interested in learning more about the pre columbian period and nazca region and couldn’t find any articles (that weren’t clearly ai and I don’t trust that) surrounding any monkey-related creatures or symbolism.
