Newly diagnosed with history of urinary blockage

My 6 year old male fur baby was recently diagnosed with diabetes.

He has a history of a Urinary Blockage that occurred in January 2024. He has been eating Hill's Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care since the blockage. He does get a special treat of about a 1/2 can or so of Purina Pro Plan UR Urinary St/Ox Wet at nighttime. He does free-feed his dry food. I am thinking of changing this and trying portion control.

With this recent diagnosis of diabetes, I am wondering how and what to change and if anyone has experienced this with cats on urinary food? I am SO nervous to take him off the urinary food because the cost and stress of the blockage was NOT fun.

We go to the vet next week for the "intake" meeting on this disease. I would LOVE to put him into remission. I think this just started happening in the last month or so. He is a very expressive and routined cat, so it was pretty easy to know something was up. We experienced rapid weight loss (4 lbs), excessive thirst, large pee clumps, and not as active.

Any advice?
