Sunrise over Mt. Everest, as seen from the Everest View Hotel, near Namche Bazaar [OC]
The mountain on the right is Ama Dablam; Mt. Everest is behind it and to the left. I don't think I have ever witnessed such a striking refraction of the sun's rays.
Velvet Purple Coronets from the Mindo Cloud Forest of Ecuador
These hummers are both beautiful and fierce in territorial disputes.
🔥Northern Lights over the Cameron Falls (near Yellowknife)
Interestingly, I had hiked out to the Cameron Falls during the day, and when I hiked down to the very edge of the falls, I thought, "Wow, this would be a great foreground to photograph the Northern Lights." That very evening, the Northern Lights appeared with extraordinary brilliance, and so I hiked back to the falls at night. And sure enough, the Northern Lights danced and shimmered right above the falls, as if on cue!
A Grizzly Mama and Her Two Cubs Pose in Jasper National Park
I had been sending my wish out into the universe to get an unobstructed picture of a grizzly and cubs when my wish was answered, and these grizzlies amazingly emerged from the woods and almost seemed to pose while taking a good, long look around, before quietly returning to the woods.
A Roseate Spoonbill Walking on Water at Myakka River State Park
Surely, birds, with their amazing powers of flight, have been one of humanity's greatest symbols of transcendence. Why else do we envision angels with wings? And in this picture--well, I'll let it speak for itself.
🔥A View of the Dolomites along the Alta Via 1 Trek
I was fortunate to hike the Alta Via 1 last September and promptly fell in love with the Dolomites. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then I hope you can see why!
🔥Northern Lights over the Cameron Falls Trail near Yellowknife
Yellowknife is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights, which are visible there 240 nights a year. This picture was taken on August 31, 2024 during a period of intense Aurora activity.
🔥 Royal Bengal Tiger in repose at Jim Corbett Park in India
While I was on safari, this majestic tiger walked up to within thirty feet of our vehicle and then lay down on a branch and gazed at me, as though posing.
Dueling Hummers
When one Velvet Purple Coronet landed right next to the other, I knew that some kind of drama was imminent. And sure enough, within a matter of seconds, the two were fluttering their wings in a turf battle--all while, in the process, giving this photographer a lovely photo-op. This picture was taken at Mindo Loma in Ecuador. [Excuse me: this should state OC in the title.]
Northern Lights in Jasper National Park [OC]
The reason that the landscape looks so bright in this picture is that there was a full moon that night, and amazingly, the Northern Lights were so bright that they weren't muted by it. I can only hope that my viewers feel as transported by the scene as I did.
Northern Lights over the Canadian Rockies [OC]
This was one of the most intense displays of Northern Lights I have ever witnessed, with a KP Index of 8, in the Canadian Rockies near Peyto Lake.
