Why should birthright citizenship be upheld?

My father, quite insistently, told me that birthright citizenship should be eliminated. He talked about "birth tourism" and how people from countries that hate the USA have children within the United States while traveling, having a child with dual citizenship, and using that child as a "spy" or to interfere with the governmental systems.

I told him that it seems like an extreme plot to encourage people to visit America while pregnant and have them give birth to a child who hates the USA. I also told him that anyone can label someone as a "non-American" and threaten their legal status, but he insisted that no one does that and that those who do lack power. Which, of course, is false; there are so, so many people in power who are actively racist and vindictive.

Since I have laid out my argument and failed to convince the guy, I was wondering what other people's thoughts were. Odds are he still won't listen, but I think it is good to get other people's opinions that are beyond my very limited perspective.

**I would love to read up more on this so if anyone has any interesting sources, feel free to include!
