World Cup 2026: How the new Brazil is taking shape and why Matheus Cunha is key

I've really like Cunha in that deeper, central striking role. It really allows him to contribute on and off the ball much more because he has so much energy.

Last season we never used him in the central role and defaulted often to Mbeumbo in the absense of Sesko but I'l be interested in seeing Cunha play that way for United.

Roy Keane on His Uncompromising Approach to Football and Life | SALT London

Really good interview. Interview starts off with talking about Ferguson. But its professional comments and speaks to the respect that existed between both men once upon a time.

Big Picture

  • Tottenham posted a £120.6m pre-tax loss (record).
  • That’s 6 straight years of losses, totalling ~£450m since 2020.
  • This comes alongside a real risk of relegation.

Revenue vs Reality

  • Revenue is strong: £565.3m (record).
  • Stadium and commercial income are major drivers:
    • £100m+ matchday annually
    • £32.5m non-football events
    • £276.7m commercial revenue

Core issue:

  • Revenue up £184.6m since 2018
  • Costs up £327.7m

Costs are rising much faster than income.

Why They’re Losing Money

Stadium Costs

  • £1bn stadium → £57m annual depreciation
  • Shorter depreciation timeline increases reported losses

Transfer Spending

  • Shift from conservative to aggressive:
    • Pre-2019: £68m net spend (6 years)
    • Post-2019: £880m net spend (7 years)
  • Transfer costs now £141.2m annually
  • Spending hasn’t improved performance

Poor Player Sales

  • £356.7m lost vs purchase value since 2019
  • Weak player trading model

Operating Costs

  • £202m (36% of revenue — highest ratio)
  • Driven by events, matches, and internal projects

Debt & Cash Flow

  • Debt: £875m
  • Interest: ~£30m/year
  • Cash down to £20.4m
  • Annual funding gap ~£90m

Now reliant on:

  • Owner funding (ENIC)
  • Borrowing
  • Selling future TV income

Relegation Impact

Revenue Drop

  • From ~£200m (PL + Europe TV)
  • To ~£55m (Championship)

Still High Revenue, But…

  • Estimated Championship revenue: ~£300m
  • Costs remain high and hard to reduce

Squad & Wages

  • Wages likely cut by 50%
  • Major player sales expected
  • Still likely highest wage bill ever for a relegated club

Structural Issues

  • Transfer debts remain
  • Interest payments unchanged
  • Stadium costs fixed

Ownership Shift

  • ENIC injected £232.5m in 4 years
  • Previously self-sustaining, now externally funded

Bottom Line

  • High revenue but even higher costs
  • Heavy spending with poor returns
  • Financial model becoming fragile

Relegation wouldn’t break the club, but it would force major restructuring and challenge the assumption that top clubs are safe from decline.
