Interest Thread for a Reincarnated as a Sword Rewatch Before the Second Season

As I promised myself, Kantei Skill is dropped from rewatch hosting for good and I will return to the roots as originally planned.

The trailer and key visual dropped today, so it is high time to try it again.

What is Reincarnated as a Sword:

> Reincarnated as a sentient weapon with memories of his past life, but not his name, a magical sword saves a young beastgirl from a life of slavery. Fran, the cat-eared girl, becomes his wielder, and wants only to grow stronger, while the sword wants to know why he is here.

Reincarnated as a Sword is a light novel written by Yuu Tanaka and illustrated by Llo. It started as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro. It also received a manga adaptation with illustrations by Tomowo Maruyama. The first season of the anime television series adaptation was made by C2C aired back in Fall 2022 for 12-episodes, and it fared well quite enough in that strong season. Directed by Shinji Ishihira, screenwriter is Takahiro Nagano, music by the quite experienced Yasuharu Takanashi. And now it will return for this Fall with another season, as all the same staff worked on S1 returns for this.

It might be basically just yet another reincarnation isekai with many things which we saw many times before, despite of that it happens to be somewhat successful and hyped, as we saw with season 1. So let's see if this will can stay even after four years. So if you do like reincarnation into inanimated objects, catgirls with super OP cheat-level skills, and delicious curry, I think you might enjoy this. But beyond that there interesting bits and parts of the worldbuilding, and story parts which might interest you.

bilibili, Hidive and Netflix has it, with subs and dubs.

Schedule:

It will go from September 18 to September 29. The final discussion post will be on September 30. The discussion threads go live at 22:00 CET/13:00 PST/16:00 EST.

Closing remarks:

This thread, like every single time, is but a big survey for me, to check how big the interest towards this.

Since season 1 had a strong hype, and I think this rewatch has this purpose, to capitalize on it bring it again. Since four years is such a long time, I welcome all of you, whether first-timers or rewatchers, interested for the new season or a memory refresher. And I do believe it is the right moment to watch it and join.

If there is anything, then please let me know. And that is all for now. Until then, I'll see you around.

Questions for the day:

  1. How traumatic was the night phantom Rin for Takashi?

  2. Tokyo Tower under a full moon, isn't this a nice view? Or dinosaurs with the kaiju feeling?

  3. Does Haruhiko and his mother have foreigner ancestry?

  4. Any guesses on who is this "S" person?

  5. Why the deliquents and what are they trying to do?

  6. An Alice-Haruhiko couple would have any sense?

  7. What do you think of the newly introduced espers as they finally met?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. u/No_Rex is wondering what is happening:

> Do you know the situation where you own a playstation (you love action shooters) and your well-meaning grandmother gifts you Mario World for Nintendo? In a somewhat similar way, I once was gifted one book of Please save my Earth. After all, watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop anime must mean I am into reading Shoujo manga, right? My memory of the plot is close to null. Not even sure if I got the first volume. All I can remember is how very distinctly shoujo the character models were.

> Dinosaurs! Alien researchers! Mind shifts! Flying 7 year olds! That was so at 150%, I have a hard time taking it seriously. That said, watching Rin bully Alice who is twice his age was pretty fun (I just fear that we are going the route where his crush on her moves from comedy to serious).

> "I came to chew bubble gum and play ribbon"

A Please Save My Earth Rewatch Interest Thread

Alright, I have been decided that there will be no Kantei Skill to be hosted, because there is no interest for that, but I still want to do something to fill its place, but with something shorter this time. After seeing interest threads for two different older shows, now it's my turn as well. And it's my first time to do a series that is from the 20th century. And yet another unique stuff from me which you might definitely like.

About Please Save My Earth:

> Alice Sakaguchi once dreamt that she is another person living on the moon. The dream is so strange and so real that Alice can't stop thinking about it. She finds out that some of her classmates are having the same kind of dream. They soon discover that they had been seeing flashes of their past lives as a team of scientists on the moon. Alice and her friends then decide to find the other members and piece together what took place back then. Complications arise when they realize that everything that happened in their previous existence continue to haunt and affect their present lives.

Please Save My Earth (or Bokutama for its shortened name) is a manga series written and illustrated by Saki Hiwatari, which was serialized from 1986 to 1994 in 21 volumes. It is a very interesting piece of work, because it is a shojo manga series, basically romance with sci-fi and supernatural elements combined. It was adapted as a six-part 30 minutes long OVA series, which is unfortunately not a complete adaptation, as it adapts only the first 8 volumes in a condensed form. It was followed by From Alice to Rin, which a compilation movie, but contains some unadapted content. And also there is an OVA called The Passing of the Golden Age, which is basically a compilation of music videos, but also contains unadapted content from the manga with an alternative ending compared to the OVA series. It was all produced by Production I.G, even Yoko Kanno worked on the music. VIZ Media licensed all of it.

Please Save My Earth also part of a trilogy, followed by Embraced by the Moonlight and I Sing with the Earth, and some other connected spin-off short stories.

Yes, it was that really influential that many artists including Naoko Takeuchi and Bisco Hatori (the authors of Sailor Moon and Ouran High School Host Club) cited this as one of their primary source of inspiration.

Streams:

Since it is an older series, it's a very tricky part, and currently by my knowledge, I don't know there is any legally accessible ways right now, but correct me if I wrong. Subs and dubs are exists for this anyways.

Schedule:

It would start in circa two weeks. It would run from August 17 to August 22 that is for sure. As for the recap movie and The Passing of the Golden Age, we shall see should I want to include that.

Why I did chose this:

This series was been very popular, successful and so influential back then. And also the themes it covers are actually deep, interesting with a very compelling and captivating plot, emotionally very strong, the production is very high quality which actually still holds really well even after more than 30 years. One could say it is a chef's kiss.

Secondly for some reason I just bumped into this somehow and I thought this looks interesting. Since I was pondering for a long time, I have been thought it could be a good material for rewatch, and I now do think the time is really right for that. Nobody did that before though.

Thirdly this is a testament of a series which could really deserve a complete adaption remake treatment, even if this never going to happen.

Final Words:

This interest thread, is nothing but a survey for me, to check how big the interest towards this. As an old series, an OVA series, a very unique and back then popular shojo title, a refined gem like this, I think there might be a strong interest (maybe). So come one, come all, I welcome all of you!

If there is anything, then please let me know. And that is all for now. Until then, I'll see you around.

A Reincarnated as a Sword and As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World Rewatch Interest Thread Before Their Upcoming Seasons

Looks like the previous interest thread post did not worked, basically I've got almost zero reactions. I still not given up my initial idea, so guess it's time to trying the second attempt, maybe it will works this time.

So let's begin, shall we?

What is As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World:

> Our protagonist, Ars Louvent, was reincarnated in another world as the young son of a minor noble who owns a small domain. Ars was not particularly strong or intelligent, but he was born with the Appraisal Skill that's able to see others' abilities and statuses. He uses his skill to find the best hidden talents in the world to make their small, weak domain into the best. An isekai tale about unification is about to start, featuring the kind-hearted Ars and the unique talents he manages to find!

As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World (shortened to Kantei Skill) is a light novel written by Miraijin A and illustrated by Jimmy. As you might expected it was originally a Shosetsuka ni Naro web novel. As it’s tradition, it also received a manga adaptation as well, with Natsumi Inoue’s illustrations. The serialization started in 2020. It received an anime adaptation as a split-cours show, which aired in 2024 - season 1 in spring, season 2 in fall, produced by Studio Mother. Director is Takao Kato, screenwriter is Yasuhiro Nakanishi who is replaced by Daisuke Ohigashi for season 3. Music by Kujira Yumemi. After the final episode of season 2 ended, a third season was announced immediately, which is scheduled to come this October as well. It is one of the many "reincarnated as an aristocrat" type of isekai.

Kantei Skill is really much of an underrated and underslept series from 2024 (a personal opinion), which I did liked from the start till the end. Even if it’s not the best or the greatest, but it has high or strong points as well, overall it's rather solid, and I would not call it middling either. Interesting story, lots of characters, intriguing politics, these might be the strongest selling points. Even if it's feels like a very personal matter to me, I still want to carry out to host a rewatch of this if the popular demand wills it.

There are many ways for it. bilibili, Hidive and Netflix has it. Subs and dubs are both available.

Schedule:

We would start in three weeks from today.

First phase is Kantei Skill. It would run from August 20 to September 12, with the concluding post will be live at September 13. Second part will be Reincarnated as a Sword, which would go from September 17 to September 29. The respective final discussion post will be on September 30. No combined two-in-one grand final post this time. The discussion threads go live at 22:00 CET/13:00 PST/16:00 EST, all of them.

Closing remarks:

This thread, like every single time, is but a big survey for me, to check how big the interest towards this.

So free feel to join! I welcome all of you! I know it's isekai slop, but from the better and well-received kind. Even so, due to this exact reason I don't have really much expectations but still hoping for the best. If anyone of you wants to join for one show, or both two, but please inform me beforehand, and this is how I will ping you in the reminders. I know I could have been selected better choices instead of these two but it is what it is, so bear with me. But if this post won't even get the sufficient amount of reactions either, then I would scrap Kantei Skill for good and return to the original idea, Reincarnated as a Sword only.

Both Kantei Skill and Reincarnated as a Sword will receive their own respective one-week and one-day reminders if this goes well.

If there is anything, then please let me know. And that is all for now. Until then, I'll see you around.

Questions for the day:

  1. Massive parasitic wasp attacks on the Holy Day, is this what everybody waited for?

  2. So for real, the entire existence of No.6 is basically a huge paradox? Is this also the revenge of Eriulias?

  3. Everything what happened four years ago, is this all connected each other?

  4. Can we pay respects for Safu? Could she have been saved?

  5. So, what will happen to No.6 and its surviving inhabitants?

  6. One last miracle to revive Shion and erase the wasps from existence, is this what the world needed? And what is this giant insect spirit?

  7. So, the plan what Shion proposed was the one which did became reality?

  8. Are you satisfied with the ending?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. Yes, Dogloan is a female:

> Inukashi was assigned mother by the baby.

> Dogloan, I don’t mind too much. Yes, I see where the problem with a self-sufficient female character warming up to a baby might come from, but I don’t see it that way. That exact storyline works just as well (and is in fact a common trope) with a male character. I also think that the whole point Dogloan’s gender has been sufficiently downplayed enough that it is not a big deal for me either way.

  1. u/DegenerateRegime and his Half-Life references:

> Okay I've been having fun with my Half-Life 2 references but this is just the bit in Black Mesa where you go from Residue Processing to Questionable Ethics. Same exact shift in visual design... but through a regular door instead of out of a maintenance access

  3. Is Lili's senses are on the right spot?

  4. Killing the security guard leader, did Shion went a bit too far or it was the right choice?

  5. Are you ready for Shion's reunion with Safu or whatever (maybe Eriulias) controls her body?

  2. How spectacular will be the Holy Day of No.6?

  3. Why did the authorities of No.6 tolerated the existenc of the outskirts population until now?

  4. Did you expected what real purpose has the Twilight House?

  5. Killing innocent civilians is what they call "purification"?

  6. Who thought this trick was the key into infiltration?

  7. What did awakened within Safu?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. u/IndependentMacaroon quoted a famous person to illustrate how dire the situation is:

> So it seems I got my explanation wish in more of a monkey's paw way, because, in the words of George W. Bush, that was some weird shit.

  1. Some interesting u/DegenerateRegime quotes:

> I tried to work out a reason to have limitations on anti-authority speech, but not make people aware those limits exist (not even in the sense of the classic antimeme quine where everyone knows you can't say certain things, and that you can't say that you can't say, etc). Perhaps the idea is that they know violating the law is widespread, but only black-bag people who they want to take into custody for other reasons? (eg as "an ideal sample", whatever that may mean). But it still doesn't make sense! In that version of events, why even have a law? It's not like you're using the law as a cover if you don't tell people the law exists... Augh. Regardless, it's a quibble on otherwise good stuff. Speaking of!

> They didn't found No.6 after the other cities as special project, but at the same time as the others. The ambition was utopian but the elites got an oar in. Not sure I love that entirely but it doesn't escape notice that we switched from the original creator's explanation to Yoimin's speculation for that line. Convention demands that in a "two simultaneous exposition scenes" situation, the same thing is being exposited on both sides; it could still defy that convention, but the more reliable narrator of the world's history is still Kaczynski-posting so.

> I have read that, yes (though a re-read might not go amiss). I get why they want to dictate speech and what speech they want to dictate. What I don't get is that they don't dictate speech. People don't know this is the law! Not even by whisper-network or having absorbed it tacitly. They're shocked when they're arrested over it. Given that people don't know this is a crime, they must surely be breaking this law all the time. Saying it's a pain when clocking in on a civil service job, or raging over street repair work, or suggesting the authority needs to make more spaces available in the elite school systems, that kinda thing. People from outside the city visit and presumably don't all get disappeared when they complain about there being no art (there might be some public-face-private-face going on, as in the USSR and North Korea).

Questions for the day:

  1. Do Shion loves dogs or do dogs love him?

  2. Rat's idea to infiltrate the correctional facility, is this a good idea? Also a good idea to keeping it a secret from Shion?

  3. That old lady is a secret agent or a brainwashed citizen?

  4. Where is Safu and what are trying to do with her?

  5. The anti-wasp serum will have any practical use and sense?

  6. What was that kiss for?

  7. What is it that Rat wants to show to Shion so badly?

  8. Why is still necessary to keep secrets and lying?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. Seems like thewre is a true parallel comparing No.6 and totalitarian dictatorships:

> Oh, so she doesn’t get to keep her artbook.

> Picasso. Co-founder of Cubism. A reference to Entartete Kunst, putting No 6 on the same level as the Nazis (their surveillance state also tracks). The interesting question is why Safu didn't anticipate that they would take it from her.

> Do teenagers in totalitarian states, having grown up under the system, both its propaganda, but also its repression, really not know how strongly they are under surveillance?

> The whole setup is still frustratingly vague but No. 6 seems if anything more technocratic and depoliticized than outright propagandistic. Not expecting anything to happen to you as one of "the good ones" is at least likely enough.

> they still let people study abroad in what they must know is a Dangerously Liberal City. I guess this is a pointed social critique (of Japan)

> Given the reference to few people visiting and the static, depoliticized atmosphere it could be

> Oh my god I can't believe I called them "wasp-people who hate human aesthetic taste" for taking away a book on noted surrealist and Franco-hater Pablo Picasso without mentioning what a completely too-on-the-nose way of calling them fascists that would be. If they do this I will scream.

  1. u/DegenrateRegime said some things about Rat:

> Even though, as is well-established, Nezumi is a huge tsundere.

  3. What is Safu's crime and why she had to be arrested? Can she be saved?

  4. Why do Rat hates No.6 so much?

  5. If No.6 is a parasitic city, does this mean is a late-stage capitalist utopia?

  6. The "third option" proposed by Shion does have any real and plausible sense? And could it work in practice?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. What does a FIFA World Cup do to a man:

> So for those completely out of the football loop, England and Norway played against each other yesterday, so /r/soccer is full of Haaland-Bellingham stuff and it sure did remind me of our MCs here

> No more England. Truly a utopia

  5. What is this stained glass mosaic window with those giant insects? Does have anything to do with the parasitic wasps or not? Do the people worship insect gods or something?

  6. That strange song and dream, is Rat and Safu connected to each other?

  7. That dance, is this an obvious boys love sign?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. We have some interesting theories:

> Quite a lot of recontextualizing today: Rat is not simply some street rat who escaped a secret government program; that place outside the walls is not simply a slum living from the trash of No 6; and there I a lot more interconnection between the inside and the outside that it previously seemed. This makes the whole setup more complicated (more chances for the writing to mess up), but also more interesting. With his mother continuing to receive screen time, it seems obvious that we will take a deep dive into the inner workings of No 6 (instead of just keeping them as anonymous enemies that will eventually be defeated).

> Obviously hard, but how hard exactly, we don't know. We still lack information about why the walled cities were constructed. Ecological catastrophe? Induced by atomic war? Climate change? We don't know. Could be anywhere from "life as usual is possible, just very inconvenient not to have modern technology" to "utterly fucked and no agriculture is possible."

> Hooooo boy, a difficult one. Well. The main problem seems to be that there's no legitimate monopoly on the use of force and so people live in a kind of hybrid of the wild west and Kowloon walled city. It's not entirely clear why they do this? Like, yeah, No.6 could represent "elites" which in our society would be "the government" but I don't get why the people of this town are living out roles in a metaphor while their "government" has gone dark and refuses to govern. As I understand, the real Kowloon wasn't like this?

> Maybe she's like Shinji's mom from Evangelion and has connections to the No.6 higher-ups from her college days?

> Organization X was responsible somehow the No.6 we know right now.

But ultimately:

> It's a typo, the X is a little katakana me in "members".

Questions for the day:

  1. Rikiga and Youmin, why do these people know Karan so much? What is her deal with the shady secrets of No.6 anyways?

  2. How hard is life beyond the wall?

  3. Is Eve Rat's real name or is just a stage name?

  4. Is it necesssary to keep a distance and having secrets between Shion and Rat?

  5. Is dogwashing a good job?

  6. What is Rat's problem with Dogloan?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. u/Shimmering-Sky was really satisified with the previous episode:

> Shimmering sky!

> Another shimmering sky!

> Nezumi “sore demo”!

  1. The parastitic wasps still unanswered, according to u/No_Rex:

> “Hibernation. Even the parasitic wasp eggs that have been planted inside people will probably pass through the winter without developing” – why would you guess that? You hibernate because the environment is bad. An egg planted into a human has an all round stable environment. We are warm blooded, after all. How would the egg even know the season? And finally, hibernation is an evolutionary adaption, but for all they (and we) know, this wasp is not the result of natural evolution.

  1. u/IndependentMacaroon do also have a good theory too:

> After action vs. deliberation we have something of a further contrast with Rat/Shion (or at least more of it) with individualism vs. collectivism or perhaps universal humanism? Shion is still somewhat understandably if gratingly naive there, but on the other hand Rat's uncaring attitude of the strong surviving and suppressing their feelings is pretty harsh too and on the latter point we can perhaps call him a little tsundere regarding Shion. They will certainly both end up more balanced in the end.

Subs and dubs are available though.

Questions for the day:

  1. How well-versed person Rat is in arts and literature?

  2. Why and how did a parasitic wasp implanted into Shion?

  3. White hair, red eyes, scar marks, is this enough proof to be proud by simply surviving a parasitic wasp? Is this what you call rebirth?

  4. Can you imagine that basically the entire populace of No.6 might have been these wasps implanted in their bodies?

  5. How can these rats pass through the wall to make contact with Karan?

  6. What is the deal with the Dogloan?

  7. Can you imagine that Shion and Rat can become mortal enemies in the near future?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. u/No_rex found a very suspicious name for an organization:

> “Contact the sanitation bureau” – that is a weird name for emergency health services. It makes a bit more sense for a decomposing corpse, but he didn’t see that yet.

  1. Safu's behavior was a bit too much for u/Shimmering-Sky:

> Wow, Safu.

> Wha–

> Girl I think you skipped over so many steps.

  1. u/DegenerateRegime has some interesting theories regarding Safu:

> Rotated thoughts since episode 1: a much simpler possible reason that the possibly-suicidally-self-sacrificing Shion whose namesake is a flower meaning "I won't forget you" isn't in the ED is that he's not long for this world. Hopefully not! There was also some speculation that genre convention might require Safu to become a villain; I don't know if I get that vibe from her - but her grandmother, scorned-by-proxy? hmm, maybe? There's often that element of generational war in this kind of story. But, we watch and find out!

> Damn maybe she is going the Villain Route.

Questions for the day:

  1. Is it not a problem that Shion lost his elite status due to sheltering Rat? Is Forbidden City a better place than Cronos?

  2. What the heck are these parasitic wasp incidents all of a sudden?

  3. Why do Safu wants banging with Shion so badly?

  4. Why do Shion had to be arrested, if he didn't committed any crimes?

  5. Did a wasp parasite was planted on Shion or something?

  6. Beyond the wall, did they found freedom?

Highlights from yesterday:

  1. I commend how u/No_Rex entered into this rewatch:

> Entering this one completely blind. Never even heard about the series. The MAL page promises scifi, so I am in. Also going by dubbed (subbed was hard to find).

  1. u/DegenrateRegime has some interesting theories of this world:

> Backstory! Uhh... the land seems to have been lost to the ocean, but outlawed by whom? It's not aliens right? It's never aliens. It's probably an authoritarian government. Or! Whales! Maybe humanity "lost most inhabitable land" to both an enemy and the sea... I support the Cetocracy

We do support the Cetocracy as well.

  1. Maybe this should be an unofficial late Pride Month rewatch:

> yeah these boys gay.

> and a little (?) gay

Questions for the day:

  1. What is this opening, can you explain?

  2. Is No.6 a really good and nice place to live?

  3. What is this noise during this rain?

  4. Is it a morally ethical and correct choice to sheltering a wounded fugitive like Rat? Or rather let he be ignored and arrested by the police?

  5. What do you think of the main backstory of this world?

Other information:

OP: Spell by Lama

ED: Rokutousei no Yoru (六等星の夜) by Aimer

Extra: No.6 by Miku Itou - To be honest it has nothing to do with our series, but added because of the title, it is the opening for Combatants Will Be Dispatched anyways
