This has been a personal project of mine and now that I've finished it I thought I might as well post it to the relevant community.

This is a list of all the settlements legally classified as cities as of the census of 31/12/1880 and of 31/12/1890.

It also includes data for the condominium of Bosnia & Herzegovina which had censuses on 16/06/1879 and 01/05/1885.

I have also added a geometric growth formula to approximate what the populations were on 01/01/1881 across the whole empire.

Basically the title, this has been my obsession for a while.

In the last couple months I've been trying to hunt down the documents containing census data, specifically raw population figures by municipality for each of the constituent states of the empire in 1871.

I've been broadly successful (despite several headaches) in finding information for the major states namely Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg and Baden, however when it comes to the smaller states and lots of the granular details I've been having trouble, which isn't helped by the fact that I don't speak German.

My general request is for help finding these documents.

I've been trying my best to browse the Munich digitization center looking for what I need but I've come to believe that some of the documents I'm looking for, despite being physically preserved, aren't publicly available as far as I know.

I might just not be good at searching.

I'd very much appreciate help or suggestions as to what to do.

I do have a somewhat arbitrary preference for the 1871 collection seeing as it's the first, but in the case that the information isn't available for all the constituent states i'd happily take the earliest collection that is completely findable online, if that even exists.

I apologize if this seems like a request to go data hunting, I wouldn't want to burden anyone with that though I'd appreciate it if I was provided with a census document that I happened to miss, I'd also greatly appreciate just generally being pointed in the right direction for my search.

Also apologies for this being a question about such a broad subject, this is my personal passion project.
