Cat replacement sizing confusion. Plus thoughts on metal cats?

Hey guys,
I’m currently looking at replacing the catalytic converter on my '98 XJ and keep seeing the MagnaFlow** **23226 listed everywhere as a "direct fit" replacement.
Here is where I’m getting confused: The specs for the 23226 list the inlet and outlet diameter at 2.5 inches. But if I’m not mistaken, the stock exhaust piping is 2.25 inches, right? What am I missing here?

Also, while I’m at it…is it worth upgrading to a metallic high-flow cat instead? Not necessarily for performance gains, but durability - e.g. ceramic substrate cracking from thermal shock during water crossings or just general trail abuse.

Cheers!
