Da skulle det være klart for Norges siste kamp før VM er igang. Norge møter mesterne av Afrika (avhengig av hvem du spør) klokken 21.00 i New Jersey.

Dette blir første gang på lenge at vi møter et motstanderlag av høyt kaliber utenfor Europa, som blir spennende å få målt seg mot. Alle medier rapporterer at det blir den faste startelleveren som skal starte til VM, og nå vet vel alle hva den er?

I will put in a clear spoiler warning before going into details.

Blade of Tyshalle is the second book in the series "Acts of Caine" by Matthew Stover, and after finishing it today I think it is probably a masterpiece that makes no sense at all.

As a big Star Wars fan, I got onto the Matthew Stover train through his novelisation of "Revenge of the Sith" and his "Shatterpoint" novel, both of which felt almost "too good" for Star Wars, I just did not expect such an intricate and profound exploration of these well-known characters, and the unique way in which he frames certain scenes, in addition to the intricately detailed and engaging action he writes.

This made me pick up "Heroes Die" in order to see whether he can accomplish something as fun and profound with his own world and characters, and it is such a fun action-fantasy book if you like seeing competent characters beat impossible stakes with some classic twists and turns along the way.

Though, behind the surface there is already so much behind the scenes in the first book. The magic system at first seems fairly generic and almost "video gamey", the adminstration and leadership on this "future" earth seems underdeveloped and vague, and at times the book kind of pivots hard into the dark and grotesque in ways that feel like it comes out of nowhere. It seems to look upon the surface of social commentary without going any deeper, and hints at larger forces at play, but in the end it does work as a fun and exciting book that feels similar to his Star Wars works, if perhaps not as strong.

Then comes this 800-page sequel, that feels like it wants to be 3000 pages long. It covers such a ridiculous range of emotions, styles and characters, where absolutely nothing goes where you think it will, at any point. Without going into detail about the plot itself, it's a story that introduces "a bunch of problems" after the ending of the first book, both small and huge, that feel entirely disconnected but somehow comes together and steadily add together to create a much darker, hopeless place than the first book, and when you think it can't get any worse, it just falls deeper into this hellhole of disaster, death and helplessness.

What makes it work is the odd pacing, the frequent switches to many different incomplete perspectives from characters where none understand anything about what is really going on, with small little abstract sections to start off each chapter, with intricate depictions of desperate "action" (?) at the metaphysical level, the psychological and through magical or direct violent means wherein the stakes and the possibilities seem impossible to grasp. Anything feels possible if a character is "determined enough", even death can be triumphed, which would be really lame and might feel lazy in other stories, but this is story is so ambitious, so complicated and weird that it somehow works, because Stover describes these "impossible feats" in such a compelling and intricate fashion.

Despite of this praise, it's kind of hard to get through sections of the book, and it's hard to not feel as though something is missing to actually make this a true showcase of mastery over the genre.

In any case, this book and this series (so far) begs to be read if you're even mildly interested and I encourage anyone to give it a chance. It can be difficult to get a hand on a book though, but I got mine through Ebay.

SPOILERS AHEAD: (Read the books if you have not!)

This will be much more scatterbrained that the above, and that's because summing up the actions of this book feels impossible. If anything, I'm kind of looking for answers and takes from other people who have read this series to help understand and discuss some of the insane content here.
So let's start with an example of something that makes no fucking sense, yet is compelling beyond what words can describe:

Towards the middle of the book, the disgraced adminstrator Kollberg has been downcasted to a poor labourer, living a bitter and empty life alongside people he despises. At work, his boss bosses him around and out of nowhere his screen lights up with a message from the board of governors, then goes blindingly white and suddenly he is filled with intense pain and soon after some sort of calm euphoria. He knows that he is in a dream, and in this dream the social police is under his personal control, and they help him rape and cannibalise on his boss which is described in a wholly disgusting manner.
Only, this isn't a dream and the godlike beast of the former Arturo Kollberg just remains in the story from this point on, and nothing about him or the events that led up to this seem to make any amount of sense, yet it doesn't need to.

In fact, he is much scarier than anything else in the book, precisely because we don't understand him, which is explored more thoroughly than anywhere else through Tan' elKoth's perspective. The scene in which he is utterly consumed by the Blind God in a similar incomprehensible manner as Kollberg is one of the most terrifying and sad moments in the book for me, as he is one of the most interesting characters.

Another character that just needs to be given recognition is Raithe, the Caineslayer, and everything that happens after he touches the blade of Kosall. The way in which Stover depicts his internal battle with Shanna, how he gradually loses perspective of which parts of himself are his own, and which thoughts are his own. Then, the added layer of how the battle looks from the perspective of the outside Monastic characters as they try to figure out what to do with him. It's just so unique, so weird and so fascinating to read.

The ending is the main reason I am questioning myself as to whether I can really consider this a great book, because if feels entirely too "simple" and oddly easy when all comes to all, and leaves a lot to be desired in terms of understanding how and why the overworld could be rebuilt so "easily" and what that actually means. I don't even know what to expect from the future books now at all, this sequel does not do anything you would expect at all.

But praised be Stover and the endless amount of creativity he poured into this book. In all honesty, I don't even understand how someone manages to write something like this and have it be somewhat coherent at all.

I had an argument with someone about whether a spacecraft reaches a "top speed" in space or if it just keeps accelerating as the rockets keep firing.

My position is that if you assume infinite fuel, then surely that means you just keep accelerating. The simple reason is inertia, if an object is in a vacuum and is currently travelling in a direction without any forces acting upon it, then it will keep going in that direction with the exact same speed. So if you do add force in that very same direction (with rockets on a spacecraft) it will increase it's speed in that direction equal to the amount of force acting upon it.

Surely there is no top speed here?
