I need to vent!

I need to vent!

I never do this. But I am fuming and I cannot figure out how to even respond to this. Here’s the context.

It’s Sunday. I own a little dinner in the middle of Rural PA. 68 seats, galley kitchen, insanely busy weekends. I have great staff who bust their butts. I have many regulars who we see every single day. Sometimes 2-3 times per day. The regulars are the heartbeat of the town, literally the kind that would give the shirts off their back. Today…every seat was full. And by that I mean that 4 top tables with 2 guests were sharing the other 2 seats with 2 people from entirely different family’s. It’s that kind of place. Open the door, scan for a seat, sit down…we will be right with you. If no seats are found the second one of us has a free second we address those standing at the front door. This morning I had people waiting outside and waiting in their cars for tables. At 9:11am these people walk in. I’m expo’ing the counter (toast, coffee, register, running plates of hot food, communicating with the kitchen), 1 waitress is taking an order, 1 waitress is filling coffee at a large table. The camera doesn’t lie…these people were at the door for less than 10 seconds before they walked out. Then proceeded to leave this review. I found them on Facebook, they are from out of the area.

I am so incredibly sick of the entitlement. Two 1 star reviews tearing down things that I cannot control, tearing down good things for little mom and pops like being packed, tearing down the community because nobody looked friendly when it was literally an entire dining room full of people having a great Sunday morning, and giving less than 10 seconds for someone to address them when it was all hands on deck of constant service. It’s exhausting. It was a great day, until this. I don’t even know how to respond because what I want to say and what is appropriate to say are 2 entirely different things.

Here’s to tomorrow and it being a work day with more regulars than entitled people.

High school accommodations?

My son is going in to 8th grade. He was diagnosed in 4th grade with dyslexia and dysgraphia. In grades 4,5,6 he had 1.5 hours of itinerate learning and 1/2 hour per week of occupational therapy. He stopped the occupational therapy in grades 6. Junior high for our district is grades 7-9 and is in the high school, and no different than senior high school. The summer before 7th grade I met with the learning support staff about his IEP and accommodations. It was then that I discovered he would no longer get itinerate learning support (OG). He would be in classes, have very limited access to a learning support teacher, and during his study hall he would be able to do his extended testing time or homework. I was terrified for him. He is still (and was at that time) on a 4th grade reading level. The learning support team made the case that due to him being exposed to the work and lessons he would learn the lessons easily. I VERY hesitantly agreed to move forward in their way and monitored him closely. It’s true…some lessons and classes were great for him. math, social studies, gym, stem, science…he excelled. However, he struggled hard in a writing, speaking and listening class and also in a language arts class. He has made no progress in advancing from a 4th grade reading level.

As we gear up to go back to school, I’m considering meeting with the learning support team and some admins of our district and really put my foot down. My son has mentioned wanted to go to college and I feel that his school is failing him. Certain accommodations we’ve asked for fall on deaf ears (audio books, guided notes, etc). His elementary teachers were great. Now I feel cornered to start making demands.

Can you tell me about your/your child’s accommodations in high school. About experiences? What else can I do?

It’s always something…

An elderly gentleman accidentally hit our make up air unit this afternoon with his camper. He let us know, and gave us his insurance information. Upon first look online we only see roof mount make up air units. Hopefully our ventilation company can come up with something else to replace it with.
