Thinking about starting a small ductwork fabrication side business good idea or bad idea?
Hi everyone,
I currently work full-time in HVAC in North Jersey, and I’ve been thinking about starting a small side business making custom ductwork pieces for small HVAC contractors.
The idea would be to start small, not open a big shop right away. I’m thinking about basic sheet metal pieces like transitions, reducers, elbows, caps, return, boots, patches, rectangular duct pieces, and simple custom pieces that contractors may need quickly, especially on weekends or after hours.
I’m not trying to compete with big sheet metal shops. My thought is that smaller HVAC companies sometimes need quick custom pieces and may not want to wait.
For people who have experience in HVAC, sheet metal, or running a small trade business:
Do you think this is a good idea?
Would small HVAC contractors actually use someone for this?
Is there enough demand for simple custom duct pieces, or is this harder than it looks?
What are the biggest risks or mistakes I should watch out for before spending money on tools, equipment, or renting a small space?
Would you recommend starting this as a side business, or should I avoid it?
Any honest advice would be appreciated. I’m trying to think this through before jumping in.
Thanks.
