I need help understanding the current state of education
I am,.. exasperated. My 11-year-old daughter, who will be entering sixth grade this fall, feels woefully behind from what I remember at her age. I’m well aware that memory can be deceptive, but I remember singing the states alphabetically, I remember tests where we had to write the names of states, continents, and oceans on blank images. But it’s recently come to my attention that my daughter doesn’t know any of this. She can’t tell me the difference between a state and a continent. And quite frankly, at this age, that scares me.
At the same time, I know it’s not a learning disability. She is a smart kid. But I’m concerned she’s just not getting a proper education. Can someone explain if this is common in the American education system now? I can’t wrap my head around what I’m experiencing. I understand I have a role in this, and trust me, I’ll be stepping up, but this seems to be remedial stuff.
