Angband 3D: Open-Source 3D client for Angband 4.2.6 across Web, Windows, and Android
Over the past few months I’ve been working on an open-source 3D frontend for Angband.
Rather than rewriting the game, it runs directly on top of the unmodified Angband 4.2.6 C engine via a clean stdio bridge. All game rules, RNG, monster AI, and damage formulas remain bit-for-bit identical to upstream.
What it does:
*Cross-Platform & `SaveVNLA` Compatible: Playable in-browser (WebGL), on desktop (Windows Godot 4 C#), or mobile (Android APK). Saves use standard vanilla binary format, you can freely move characters between your desktop terminal, the browser, and mobile.
*Strictly Turn-Based: Camera yaw takes 0 game turns so you can survey rooms. Stepping, casting, and inventory actions advance turns identically to vanilla.
*Instant ASCII Toggle: Press `[Tab]` anytime to drop straight back into the authentic 80×24 terminal view.
*The Living Chronicle (Web exclusive): An optional narrative log that hooks the engine's raw event stream, translating vault dives, unique kills, and near-death escapes into an in-game journal of your run.
*Play in browser: https://angband3d.com
*GitHub (GPLv2): https://github.com/ThunderbearStudios/angband3d
*Architecture notes and standalone offline builds in the comments.
*Also, please be kind to the server as it is self funded and can only handle ~50 clients!
