F1 is trying to ruin the trackside experience for fans with GA tickets
I attended the British GP on Friday for the first time since 2021, and left feeling a bit annoyed at how F1/Silverstone handle the crowds and particularly the GA areas. The ticket prices are already ridiculous, not to mention the amount of corners/parts of the circuit that are easily accessible at any other race meeting being blocked off or locked behind expensive ticket add ons for the Grand Prix.
A majority of the trackside viewing spots on the inner track (which costs £70+ for each day on top of a regular ticket) are covered in big black tarps to block the otherwise good views, or have staff there that do not let you stop to watch. I talked to one of these people and she herself said she hates having to tell fans to move and doesn’t understand the decision, but just has to do what she is told.
I have also attended 4 out of the 5 Saudi Arabian GPs, and noticed a shift in how they managed the GA areas from 2024 to 2025. Every GA location I could stand at and view from in 2024 was now manned with staff in 2025 that did not let you watch trackside. Every single spot where you had any sort of view of the track had people now stood there telling you to move and that you are not allowed to watch trackside.
At that point, what is the actual point of attending the Saudi GP with a general admission ticket? For the rides? For the concerts? It must be because you are forbidden from actually watching the cars on track at Jeddah with a general admission ticket. I asked the staff this question as well, and they said if you want to watch the trackside action with your own eyes, to purchase a grandstand ticket, and that you’re only options as a GA ticket holder were to watch the screens in the fan zones and go on the rides.
This was incredibly disappointing to me, and I was even more disappointed to see a more classic circuit like Silverstone moving in this direction. That being said, there are a lot of good GA areas at Silverstone and they get very large crowds, so I can understand it slightly to an extent, at least more than the BS rules at Jeddah.
So to conclude, does anyone feel like F1 is becoming an increasingly worse experience to attend in person for fans? It feels like F1 is trying to make the GA experience as bad as they can to try and incentivise people to purchase more expensive grandstand tickets, certainly so at Jeddah. For me it feels like it has become an experience no where near worth the price it costs, and basically any other racing event is better value for money and treats their fans better, and I hope it changes and that F1 can become a more accessible event. What do you think?
