Day 2 of showcasing my SMP "Forever" World. Today: The military camp and industry of Zafaran al-Shamal
Hello friends!
Today I want to show you 2 further additions to the city of Zafaran al-Shamal:
- The military camp
- The heavy industry area
Description:
For the camp I wanted to get the feeling across, that it was just set up recently. Therefore you see makeshift pallisades, tents and quickly erected huts and almost exclusivly wooden construction. Instead of the grand and mighty castle in the background, the focus was on small details.
As you can see in image 4 and 5, there are items scattered around the camp. All of these have custom flavor text (the purple text below the item) and names. These are meant to be picked up, read and either kept or put back by the hypothetical player. Like I already mentioned, the focus were small details, breathing life into the desert, so the player would be encouraged to wander around the world and discover unique items (some are also very useful!) and capture little but dear stories of individual characters.
The camp features a watchtower, barracks, a checkpoint, interrogation and holding area, stables, traning area, communal cooking, a forge and of course the command tent.
Moving to the industry district, it is clear that this is a relativly old (and not as advanced) part of the world with poor/outdated building technique, though most still holds up. The idea was that jobs that create a lot of noise, smell and pollution would be located outside the main city to isolate the stench/noise from the average citizen. My personal favorites are the clay mine and the cart workshop.
Lore:
In my previous post I mentioned that the entire area has intricate lore! From today I want to give you small hints and ideas without spoiling the entire story: The reason for the (in-universe) new military camp is a group of insurgents who have recently caused some uproar in the trading city of Zafaran al-Shamal. The name roughly translates to (with some liberties) Norther Saffron. (if I translated it correct).
Therefore the city is the most northern situated city in the nation which for now we call The Sultanate. Due to the distance from the capital, the Sultan and subsequently the regional governor have lost a great deal of influence over the vast territory belonging to Zafaran al-Shamal.
The Sultan has therefore sent a battalion of his elite Ashen Guard to deal with those insurgents ... Though you may here whispers at night "Why is the Sultan sending the Elite to our town..." "Is there maybe a superior motif?"
